St. Mary's Anglican Church at Bulla originally occupied a site along Oaklands Road, adjacent to 'Woodlands' homestead. It was established in 1859. With there building of the Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine it was found that the church on its existing site was directly under the flight path of the aircraft so the building was demolished stone by stone and rebuilt in the Bulla township adjacent to the Alistair Clark Rose Garden. The original site has not been developed because some early graves are there.St. Mary's Church at Bulla is one of the earliest to be established in the Bulla district. Mrs Emily Ruth George of 26 Scheele Street, with husband, Joe. Emily & Joe were English migrants; they bought their home in 1919. Daughter Marie was born in 1914 when they are listed in the electoral roll at 'Hasland', Croydon Road, Surrey Hills; his occupation is given as a boilermaker. Emily (nee Sturgess) - d 15 November, 1960; buried Box Hill Cemetery - M-199A-0034 along with daughter Marie. Possible birth c Oct 1880, Birmingham (not confirmed); marriage c Jan 1905, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Marie George became a school teacher and was on the staff at Chatham Primary School for a number of years. She died in February 1989. Mrs George was known for her hospitality. Anecdotes: On one occasion the government was to build six houses opposite in an area which was mostly paddocks. The materials were delivered and a caretaker allocated to guard them. He arrived with his wife to find a meagre tin shed as ‘home’. Mrs George responded by boarding the couple, for a very minimum amount for the six months. A rather different anecdote involves the droving of sheep from Lower Plenty across paddocks and tracks, through Doncaster and down Union Road to the station en route to the Richmond abattoirs. This was a seasonal activity and the men (and sheep) used to rest in the paddocks in Union Road, at the corner of Weybridge Street – behind the Georges’ home. When Mrs George heard the sheep, she would go out and fill the drovers’ billies with tea, handing out thick cheese sandwiches made from her homemade bread. Wally Ives was a fruiterer who had a shop in Union Road. He was an active participant in the Empire Day parades of the 1930s. The donor Jean Boucher was the daughter of Wally Ives. She was an early active member of the History Nook at the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and member of the Surrey Hills Historical Society. The Oakland Motor Car Company was based in Pontiac, Michigan and was a division of General Motors. Although it was purchased by General Motors in 1909, the company continued to produce modestly priced automobiles until 1931 when the brand was dropped in favour of the division's Pontiac make. A document outlining the relevant by-laws produced by the City Of Kew to regulate the minimum size of allotments in Barkers Road, Burke Road, Cotham Road, Glenferrie Road and Studley Park Road, as well as in other streets more generally. The by-laws specify the size of allotments in which single unit dwellings, attached houses and maisonettes, and flats could be built. In the ‘main streets’ a minimum land area for single unit dwellings was 8,100 square feet, with an average frontage of 60’ and a depth of 135’. In other streets this was reduced to an overall size of 6,250 square feet, with an average dimensions of 50’ x 125’. In specifying the land area required by flats, different sizes were regulated for the construction of between two and six flats. Six flats at the time when the regulations were passed must have been the upper limit permitted. Understanding the size of land listed in imperial measurements can be a challenge. Within Australia, the so-called quarter acre block was approximately 11,000 square feet. Those specified in the by-laws would appear to be smaller. The document was pasted on the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection.This is a rare (undated) document produced by the City of Kew defining how subdivision within the municipality should occur. The State Revenue Office (SRO) is a $5 million world-class purpose built revenue collection facility employing over 200 people. SRO relocated 40% of its operations from Melbourne to the Ballarat Technology Park, creating more than 180 employment opportunities for skilled people from the region. The Ballarat facility houses the majority of the SRO's operations capability and utilises state-of-the-art technology. The BTP was selected to host the SRO after a feasibility study revealed that Ballarat was an ideal regional centre to support this important government function. The BTP enables the SRO to be in close proximity to an existing cluster of technology based enterprises and organisations, as well as education, training and research opportunities presented to SRO staff at the nearby Federation University.
