Melbourne Legacy
Document - Memoir, Escape from Rabaul
A first hand account written by Legatee Ashley Dore (VX 42841, 1918-1986) of the efforts of the Australian soldiers who elected not to surrender and who hid in the jungle intending to make their way to the coast and find a boat to New Guinea. Dore has written an engrossing account of the difficulties and privations they face, ultimately arriving in Pondo where they rejoined other troops under the command of Captain Appel who was able to get them to Rein Bay and finally Cairns. Dore had a civilian career with AMP in positions of increasing responsibility and became a Legatee on 9th September 1958. He was also Assistant District Commissioner in the Boy Scout Association. His financial acumen led to him becoming Honorary Treasurer of Melbourne Legacy after only three years of membership, and he was appointed President in 1965. Ill health curtailed his activities in 1970 and he died at the relatively early age of 67. A vivid account of the wartime experiences of a Melbourne Legacy President which exemplifies the type of person who was invited to become a Legatee. Its value is illustrated by the fact that a copy was sent to the Australian War Memorial.White A4 paper with black type x 8 pages.Handwritten in blue biro: 'L 18' Handwritten in black biro: '1/7/01 Copy sent to Aust War Memorial' (signature illegible)memoir, world war two -

Book, The Economics of Mining (Non-Ferrous Metals), 1938, 1938
The book was used by Charles Bacon who studied at the University of Nevada in the late 1930s/early 1940s. Bacon worked at Bunker Hill Mines and Kellogg Idaho, before arriving in Australian in 1951. He worked for CN Myers, a company involved with paper converting. CN Myers was a family business (on Charles Bacon's maternal line). The Mackay School of Mines, Nevada was established in 1908. At the time of writing this mook T.J. Hoover was Professor of Mining and Metallurgy and Dean of the School of Engineering at Stanford University. Theodore Jesse Hoover, brother of the 31st President of the United States, was born in West Branch, Iowa, on January 28, 1871. He attended Stanford and received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Geology and Mining in 1901. Following graduation his professional career started with the position of assayer for the Keystone Consolidated Mining Company. After one year, he became assistant manager for the Standard Consolidated Mine, and a year later he was promoted to manager of the operation. In 1907 Hoover went to London as general manager of Minerals Separation, Ltd. This company was developing the froth flotation process for recovering minerals from ores. Hoover took an active part in the development of the flotation concentration process and authored one of the first books on the concentration of ores by flotation. After four years with Minerals Separation, Ltd., Hoover entered private practice as a consulting mining and metallurgical engineer with offices in London and in San Francisco. He was very successful and held positions of consulting engineer, managing director, director, and president of many mining companies in America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. He returned to Stanford in 1919 as Professor of Mining and Metallurgy and Executive Head of the Department of Mining and Metallurgy. His experience and ability in organization made him a natural leader. He was influential in the formation of the School of Engineering at Stanford. The School was formed in 1925 and he was made dean, a position he held until his retirement in 1936. As dean of engineering, he promoted a broad fundamental training program for undergraduate engineering students. Under his guidance, emphasis was placed upon graduate work and he was responsible for developing strong graduate engineering curricula at Stanford. While dean he continued teaching and his course, "The Economics of Mining," developed into a book which was published in 1933. He became interested in the functions of engineers and, with Professor Fish, wrote a book entitled "The Engineering Profession" which was published in 1940 and revised in 1950. In addition to his academic activities he was generous in his hospitality. Faculty and students alike enjoyed the annual field day and barbecue at his Rancho del Oso, near Santa Cruz. He was widely read and had a lively interest in all the things he encountered. He speculated on the antiquity of man and man's early production processes. To verify an idea regarding flint tools, he studied their shapes and became proficient in making arrow heads. He was also interested in wild life, and was one of the founding members of the Cooper Ornithological Society. Photograph - Historical, Port Fairy Lighthouse Keepers Cottage, Late 19th to early 20th centuries
The late 19th to early 20th century stone cottage with weatherboard extensions. From research, it has been determined that the cottage was the Port Fairy (Belfast) Lighthouse Keepers cottage. The dome roof in the background indicates a lighthouse, in which case the cottage would have been the living quarters for a lighthouse keeper and assistant keeper. The narrow poles could have been for signals and antennae. The object on the rock stack looks like a large metal milk can.The photograph shows a typical late 19th to early 20th century cottage, abandoned at dilapidated for many years. Black and white rectangular photograph mounted on card. The image shows a dilapidated stone cottage with an old picket fence. Extending behind the stone cottage are gabled roofs above weatherboard walls. The cottage has corrugated roof sheets of different colours, and four chimneys, three with chimney pots. From research, it has been determined that the cottage was the Port Fairy (Belfast) Lighthouse Keepers cottage. Near the fenceline on the left, a corrugated water tank is positioned below a pipe joined to the roof gutter. Nearby are a timber shed and timber walls or screens. In the background are two tall narrow poles with spheres on top, higher than the cottage, with one pole on each side, the left one attached to the building. A domed roof with a knob on top is on the right behind trees. Several angular shapes appear on the horizon on the left, one almost hidden by the trees. The foreground is rocky and slopes uphill on the right. At the foot of the slope is a stack of closely fitted rocks with an object shaped like a milk can on top and an object to its left that is like an open grid. Handwritten Inscriptions are on the reverse side of the photograph.Pencil on board: " D9 / 200 x 150" Pen on sticker: "52"flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, warrnambool, great ocean road, shipwreck coast, cottage, lighthouse, iron roof, stone building, picket fence, water tank, weatherboard building, 19th century cottage, early 20th century cottage, abandoned cottage, antenna, chimneys, milk can -

Brighton Historical Society
Clothing - Dress, Evening dress, circa 1840
The donor and family of this gown were long-term Brighton residents, and the gowns were held by them as family heirlooms prior to donation to Brighton Historical Society. Originally owned by Elizabeth Emma Adams and Cecilia Elizabeth Adams, it is believed that the dress was brought to Australia by either a half brother, James Smith Adams, or a younger sister, Sophia Charlotte Louisa Adams (later known as Mother Rose Columba Adams). Elizabeth and Cecilia were the daughters of James Smith Adams (a squire, 1780-1860) and Elizabeth Emma McTaggart (1793-1843) of Tower House, Woodchester in Gloucester, a property which Elizabeth later inherited. Originally a monastery, Tower House had been converted into a stately home after the Reformation. According to information originally provided by the donor, both this dress and the dress T0004.1 were made for Elizabeth and Cecilia, to be worn at the young Queen Victoria’s first 'drawing room ball' following the end of court mourning in 1838 for her uncle William IV who died in 1837. In 1838 Cecilia would have been twelve years old and Elizabeth would have been ten years old. It is possible that this dress was worn by one of the girls to this event as it is of appropriate dimensions for a child of that age, although its design is very formal and adult. Elizabeth was born on 30 June 1828 at Tower House and died on 1 May 1909. She created a scandal when she eloped with her first husband, Thomas Charles Gardiner at the age of 18. The validity of the marriage was later formally investigate and, while it was confirmed as valid, a second church wedding was subsequently held. Thomas died in 1878. Elizabeth subsequently remarried Reverend R. E. Blackwell, but was widowed again by 1889. Cecilia was born on 17 December 1826 and died in 1902 a spinster recluse in England. At the inquest into Cecelia's death in 1904 it was revealed that she had clearly come from a family of means as her home was filled to the brim with highly valuable goods, many in boxes. She was buried in the family vault at Woodchester. Elizabeth and Cecilia's sister Sophia converted to Roman Catholicism in 1851 and became a nun, taking the religious name 'Rose Columba'. In 1883 Mother Rose Columba led a group of eight to Australia, answering a call for Dominican sisters to nurse the sick in Adelaide. Upon arrival, she founded St. Dominic's Priory and the Church of Perpetual Adoration in North Adelaide, using her inheritance to build the chapel. Elizabeth's second son, George Henry Somerset, who inherited the Adams family estate dropped the 'i' in Gardiner and added the maiden name of his grandmother. Therefore, the family name has now become Gardner McTaggart. These Adams family entries have been updated with information provided by Dr Herbert Gardner McTaggart, great-grandson of George Henry Somerset in April 2016. Mr McTaggart contacted the society after finding our entries online.A hand sewn cream, pale blue, orange and gold embroidered satin formal dress, the bodice dates from circa 1840. This dress shares a skirt with T0004.2, which dates from a different period (circa 1890). The bodice features a wide shallow neckline finished with a beige coloured cord in two decorative lines. The sleeve is set on the true shoulder and is a short fitted sleeve with decorative gathering and two lines of corded detail. The bodice is shaped to the body with 2 sets of six fine knife pleats diagonally positioned narrower over the waist and spreading out over the bust. These pleats are secured with six double lines of stitching. The bodice finishes high on the waistline at either side and points down to a point over the centre front. The base of the bodice is finished with a piped edge and beige decorative cording. The bodice encloses the body at the centre back where it has holes that presumably would have held lacing. The back features four diagonal knife pleats finishing at the centre back and splaying out over the shoulders. The waistline at the back features only a very gentle point.cecilia elizabeth adams, elizabeth emma adams, james smith adams, elizabeth emma mctaggart, sophia charlotte louisa adams, queen victoria, drawing room ball, 1840s fashion, tower house, woodchester -

Photograph - Fred Rochow Railways Collection - Fireman Ian Sandford
The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Fireman Ian Sandford on steps of Locomotive T329. He is moving into position to apply the hand brakes. The T class were a class of diesel locomotives built by Clyde Engineering, Granville, NSW for the Victorian Railways between 1955 and 1968. Locomotive T329 was part of the first order completed and entered service in June 1956. At that time, they became the most numerous diesel loco in Victoria. In 1984, the 13 first series T class locomotives were sent back to Clyde Engineering Plant at Somerton in Victoria for a complete rebuild after which they became the P class numbered P11 to P23. This included locomotive T329 which became Locomotive P12. The P Class have proven to be a reliable and dependable class, seeing service across the state in both passenger and freight duties. They often operated in push-pull mode, with a locomotive at each end of the train. The P class locomotives ceased being used for regular passenger operations in November 2012. Although locomotive P12 (T329) is primarily in storage it is still operational and can be hired for special events and as recently as 2017 was also used as an infrastructure maintenance train. At top of train between headlights "T329" In centre Victoria Railways logo "VR"fred rochow, victorian railways wodonga, locomotive 1329 -

View from Grace Mitchell's shop at the corner of Mount Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace Mitchell was probably best known for her Eltham shop at the corner of Mt Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace's memories covered many local identities who were patrons of her shop between 1954 and 1971. From the elevated position of her shop and home Grace was able to view a varied passing parade of Eltham events from ERSILAC, Easter and Eltham Festival parades passing on their way to Eltham Lower Park, circuses in Wingrove Park (then Bremner’s Reserve), roadworks and other happenings. book, Burn's Justice, 1814
This book was used for ceremonies by a parish officer or justice of the peace. It is the second volume in a series of five. Richard Burn was born in Westmorland. He matriculated at The Queen's College, Oxford in 1729. He was not awarded his B.A. until 1735, three years after he left the university to accept a position as schoolmaster at Kirkby Stephen in Westmorland. Burn then entered the Church of England, and in 1736 became vicar of Orton in Westmorland. He was a justice of the peace for the counties of Westmorland and Cumberland, and devoted himself to the study of law. In 1762, after Burn had attained notoriety as a legal scholar, the University of Oxford awarded him an honorary LL.D. He was appointed chancellor of the diocese of Carlisle in 1765, an office which he held until his death aged 86. Burn's Justice of the Peace and Parish Officer, first published in 1755, was for many years the standard authority on the law relating to justices of the peace. It has passed through some 30 editions, half of which appeared after Burn's death. (info. Functional object - Bell, Probably second half of 19th Century or first half of the 20th Century for this particular item
The school bell has been used in various forms for several centuries. In Australia and the UK it was often a hand bell, located on the teacher's desk in a small school. In larger schools it was positioned in a central area, and one bell was used to signal to all classrooms. In North America it was more usual to find a large bell on a stand located in a central area of the school where it could be heard by everyone throughout the premises. More recently, the school bell has become wall located, and electrically activated, using a mechanical timing apparatus. Now the same bell is computer programmed and activated, although there are many older bells still in operation. The school bell was rung at the beginning at the school day, often to summon students to the morning assembly in larger schools. It was then rung throughout the day to signal the start and end of specific lesson periods, the beginning and end of school morning and afternoon breaks, the lunch period, and the end of the school day, no doubt eagerly awaited by many students! The school bell was used as a timing device in schools to signal the start and end of specific activities.Bell brass with heavy metal square shaped base and wooden handle-hand held, Kel(?)her Melbourne on the topInscribed on the metal at the top of the bell are the letters "Kel(?)her Melbourne" flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, bell, school, lessons -

Barbers’ Equipment, hair clippers steel, c1950
Hair clippers are specialized implements used to cut human head hair. They work on the same principle as scissors, but are distinct from scissors and razors. :Hair clippers comprise a pair of sharpened comb-like blades in close contact one above the other which slide sideways relative to each other, a mechanism which may be manual or electrical to make the blades oscillate from side to side, and a handle. The clipper is moved so that hair is positioned between the teeth of the comb, and cut with a scissor action when one blade slides sideways relative to the other. Friction between the blades needs to be as low as possible, which is attained by choice of material and finish, and frequent lubrication. Hair clippers are operated by a pair of handles that are alternately squeezed together and released. Barbers used them to cut hair close and fast. The hair was picked up in locks and the head was rapidly depilated. Mid 20thC such haircuts became popular among boys, and young men in the military and in prisons. Domestic object - Haberdashery, damask tablecloth, c1900
Damask is a reversible figured fabric of silk, wool, linen, cotton, or synthetic fibres, with a pattern formed by weaving. Damasks are woven with one warp yarn and one weft yarn, usually with the pattern in warp-faced satin weave and the ground in weft-faced or sateen weave. Twill damasks include a twill-woven ground or pattern. Damask weaves appear most commonly in table linens and furnishing fabrics, In the 1900s, the invention of the Jacquard loom made damask much easier to create. Jacquard fabric was woven with the direction of a series of punch cards that could be used to alter the position of the warp threads in the fabric. These punch cards automated the weaving process, allowing manufacturers to mass produce patterns and making the resulting fabric much less expensive than it once had been. Modern Jacquard weaving is accomplished with computer controls. Irish Linen was very popular because of its high quality and this table cloth may have been made in Ulster, Northern IrelandA white damask tablecloth.clothing, brighton, moorabbin, linen, pioneers, haberdashery, market gardeners, dressmakers, craft work, damask, weavers, jacquard loom -

Photography, Camera Kodak Flash 11 with leather case c1940, c1940
Kodak was founded by George Eastman and Henry A. Strong on September 4, 1888 in New York USA. During most of the 20th century, Kodak held a dominant position in photographic film. Kodak began to struggle financially in the late 1990s, as a result of the decline in sales of photographic film and its slowness in transitioning to digital photography, despite developing the first self-contained digital camera. The first model of the Kodak camera appeared in 1888. It took round pictures 6.4 cm (2.5 in) in diameter, was of the fixed focus type, and carried a roll of film enough for 100 exposures. Its invention practically marked the advent of amateur photography, as before that time both apparatus and processes were too burdensome to classify photography as recreation. The first films had to be loaded into the camera and unloaded in the dark room, but the film cartridge system with its protecting strip of opaque paper made it possible to load and unload the camera in ordinary light. The Brownie camera was introduced in 1900, creating a new mass market for photography.
