"William John Leslie Bennetts". William enlisted as No. 4433 in the AIF on 7.7.1915 aged 24 years 5 months in the 14th Reinforcements, 6th Battalion. He embarked for Egypt on 28.1.1916 then for France on 29.3.1916. Appointed Acting Corporal on 3.8.1916. In hospital on 4.11.1916 with Trench feet, re-joined unit on 12.3.1917. Appointed Corporal 19.7.1917. Wounded in action 5.10.1917, GSW to the head. Re-joined unit 21.11.1917. Appointed Lance Sergeant 10.8.1918 then Sergeant soon after, Returned to Australia 1.9.1919 and discharged from the Army on 25.10.1919. During WW2 William enlists in the CMF as No. v362254 on 14.4.1942 and discharged on 8.6.1944 with the Rank of Sergeant. Sepia toned photograph of a soldier in Australian Army uniform. Map, Contour map of Surrey Hills showing potential sites for the Telecom Tower
The PMG / Telecom / Telstra tower was built in 1961-1963 as a relay station to support television and radio links between city and regional broadcasting stations. The tower itself was 45 m in height with a 2 storey building for equipment and staff surrounded by garden. From the beginning it was opposed by local residents. The location is said to be the second highest site in Melbourne, sometimes described as Delaney's Hill.Two A3 photocopied sheets of a map showing part of Surrey Hills, roughly between Windsor Crescent and Belmont Street (north / south) and Standard Avenue and Balmoral Crescent (east / west). The map shows contour lines and house sites, 16 of which are numbered. One sheet has been inscribed in top RH corner with notes regarding the significance of the numbers."Contour map of potential sites / for the telecommunications tower which / was eventually sited at 2. / Jock Campbell OBE was our neighbour / at 4 Theodore St when we moved into / the area in 1984. "William Edwin HAYWARD" VX30915 enlisted20.6.1940 age 27 years in 2/2nd Anti Aircraft Regt, embarked for the Middle East 5.2.1941, disembarked Australia 18.3.1942, embarked fro New Guinea 24.5.1942, disembarked Australia 7.2.1944, (received leave to Aust during that near 2 years) he was hospitalised with Dermatitis to face, arms & legs, Malaria, discharged from the AIF 3.10.1945. Enlisted 20 June 1940. Discharged 3 Oct 1945. Rank: Gunner 2/2nd ANTI AIRCRAFT REGT.Cushion - handcrafted, brown and red leather floor cushion or pouffe - a low footstool. The spoon was given to Maxwell Barry Cowden VX19297 2/2 Pioneer BN by an American POW. He carried the spoon tied to the side of his loin cloth. Max worked on the Burma Railway and in the Coal Mines in Japan, Senryu 24 and Fukuoka camps. After the war he could not sit on a chair for a long time and would just squat on the floor with his back to the wall as he had done as a POW. Musical Instrument, Mouth Organ and Box, Early 20th century. The Trade mark sign has circle being held by two hands has star inside which would indicate that it was before WW2
Matthew Hohner began manufacturing mouth organs in 1857 in Germany and became quite popular over the ensuing years with production reaching over 1 million units in the 1880’s. Control of the business passed to his sons around 1900. By 1920 the company was producing 20 million harmonicas a year. They sold to both sides of the conflict during the first world war. Other musical instruments were made by the company in the 20th century. Ernst Hohner retired from the firm in 1965 after 45 years at the healm. Harmonicas and mouth organs were mass produced in the later part of the 19th and into the 20th century and as such are items with which many people can identify. It has social and cultural significance. The harmonica has chrome top and bottom with wooden section in middle. Box is bright pink with label depicting a musical band in tones of orange and black.Harmonica has Jazz band and Made in Germany engraved on the top.
