Coloured- The planned township of Sandhurst is placed over the early Bendigo creek township of 1854. The two main streets of the early township were Camp and Auction streets. The street shown as Dowling street later became Queen & Hopetoun streets. The building near the bridge at View Point is Pykes Building. The Post Office was located here in 1854 - 58. Bernal street is now Chapel street. The creeks were straightened to their present courses. Streets on map are. Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Corner residence circa 1900: Swedish born Karl Van Damme arrived on the Bendigo diggings in about 1852 and established himself as a tobacconist at 85 Pall Mall, next to the Shamrock Hotel. Although he had been living at the corner of View and Valentine streets in Sandhurst as early as 1883 it was not until 1898 that William Beebe designed a Queen Victoria style building erected by G.A. Davey for Van Damme. By 1905, van Damme, recorded as a tobacco merchant and importer, had established a branch at 143 Pall Mall, near Mitchell street. He sold the business at 85 Pall Mall in 1909, but remained at number 143 until the early 1920s. By this time it was known as Pikes Buildings. Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Business: City Cash Store, circa 1875. John McClelland was first registered as a brewer at Kangaroo Flat in 1861. In 1862, McClelland moved to the Australasian Store in Bridge Street, Sandhurst. He then established a business and opened a branch store in Pall Mall, between Bull and Mundy streets. He was advertising for assistant grocers for his Mitchell Street branch in January, 1874. On January 30, he offered the Pall Mall store for auction and invested money into the City Cash Store at No. 5 Bath Corner, next to Browne & Heale chemists. This shop had closed by September 1877. Document. Newspaper Article - Mr J W Faul, J. P. Newspaper article from 'Bendigo Advertiser' dated Saturday Feb 3 1917, reporting on the death of Mr John William Faul, J. P. He was born in 1849 London. He worked in the publishing room of the 'Bendigo Advertiser' c1863 - 1865. Was an apprentice plumber and was later foreman on the Hepburn Mineral Water Supply Works at the age of 20. In 1871 he opened a shop in Williamson St, later Williamson St and then Hargreaves St until a fire on 21 Dec 1912 destroyed his business. In 1891 he was gazetted a Justice of the Peace. In 1902 he contested the South Sandhurst Seat, narrowly missing out. Colour photograph of Lt General Brian Ashley "Ash" Power AO, CSC . Ash Power was born on the 20th of January 1957 in Wangaratta, Victoria. After completing his secondary education at Wangaratta High School, he entered the Royal Military College in 1975, graduating in 1978 into the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery. His initial appointment was as a Section Commander in 4th Field Regiment. He further served in 4th Field Regiment as a Gun Position Officer, Assistant Adjutant, Adjutant, Operations Officer (BatteryCommander Headquarters Battery) and Commanding Officer.Ash has commanded the 1st Brigade, 1st Division and Training Command – Army. He has served on exchange at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Camberley, United Kingdom and has had other training appointments at the School of Artillery, and the Royal Military College Duntroon. He also served as the Defence Attaché in Thailand. From June 2004 to July 2005 he was appointed as Director, Combined Planning Group, US Central Command, Tampa. He served as Governor-General of Australia from 1945 to 1947, the only member of the British royal family to hold the post. Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, GCB, CI, GCVO, GBE (born Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott; 25 December 1901 – 29 October 2004) was the wife of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the third son of King George V and Queen Mary. She was the mother of Prince William of Gloucester and Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. James “Jinger” Trewartha was a well known cricketer in the Bendigo District Cricket Association in the 1890s, playing for the Long Gully Cricket Club. James was born in 1871 in Sandhurst to Abraham and Sarah (nee Traverton) Trewartha. He was the second eldest son with seven brothers and five sisters. In the late 1880s the family moved to Milroy Street, Ironbark. James and his brother Albert played in the BDCA premiership teams of 1896/97, 1897/98, 1898/99, 1900/01, 1901/02. Long Gully Cricket Club 1894 – 95. Long Gully joined the BDCA. James Trewartha was first recorded playing in the BDCA. He took an outstanding 8 wickets for 10 runs in one match. 1897 – 98 Trewartha played in a Bendigo XVIII against an England XI. Trewartha won the BDCA Bowling Average. 1898 – 99 Trewartha won the BDCA Bowling Average. At the 1899 annual banquet of the L.G.C.C., James Trewartha was presented with a gold watch and chain, subscribed for by the District’s cricketers. (10866.1) 1901 – 02 Trewartha won the BDCA Bowling Average. 1903 – 04 Last record of Trewartha playing in the BDCA. 1904 – 05 Long Gully left the BDCA. James Trewartha never married. He moved to South Melbourne in 1910 to live with his mother and sister Mary Ann (Polly) Angwin. James Trewartha died on 9 September 1926 when hit by a train. He is buried in Fawkner Cemetery. Bendigo Advertiser '' The way we were'' from 2000. Busy: the Frank Brown Brick factory, Back Creek, circa 1900. Frank M. Brown was born in 1857. He began his working life as an apprentice pattern maker with A. Roberts & Sons, iron founders, in Wills Street, Sandhurst. He later became foreman of Horwoods Foundry in Vine Street. He formed a foundry partnership with Thomas R.J. Carter in 1887 as Carter & Brown. In 1889 he left Carter to start his own City foundry in Wattle Street. In 1892 Brown established a steam brick works opposite 208 Sheepwash Road (now Sternberg Street) which continued to operate until about 1916.
