This is a travel book written by Mary Gaunt (1861-1942). She was an Australian author who gained international recognition for her novels, travel books, magazine articles and short stories. The wife of Dr H. L. Miller, she lived in Warrnambool from 1894 to 1900 and wrote some of her novels whilst in the town, using local scenes and situations for some of her writings. Her travel books are important as she wrote about her adventures in countries such as Africa and China where she was often touring places not previously visited by a white woman unaccompanied by other Europeans. This original copy of Mary Gaunt’s book about her travels in Jamaica is significant. Not only was Mary Gaunt a noted Australian writer but she was also a resident of Warrnambool for some time and thus has her place in Warrnambool’s history. This book was sent by Mary Gaunt to her brother Clive, resident in Rangoon at the time of the book’s publication. This is a hard cover book of 258 pages. The book has a dark green cover with gold lettering on the spine. The cover is very mottled and stained. There are four black and white photographs scattered throughout the text. The first issue of the school magazine The Minervan Nov 1913 records the unveiling of the portrait. See file attached. William Henderson served as the school's first President for many years. Artist James Swinton Diston (1857 - 1940) created the portrait for the family in 1900. It was gifted to the school at an unveiling ceremony held 19 August 1913. The portrait was displayed in the school for many years before being transferred to St Andrews Kirk. It was located in a shed at St Andrews around 1990 and returned to the College per favour of old collegian Clark Chester, former Captain of Henderson House. Sweetheart cards WW1 Woven silk postcards were produced in Krefeld in 1898 , Germany. Embroidered silk postcard were first made in Paris in 1900. The popularity of the silk postcard peaked during World War 1. The different examples shown reflect what, and to whom the soldiers sent them to during this period. An estimated 10 million hand made cards were produced from 1915 1919. Tjhe cards were generally hand embroidered by French women in their homes on strips of silk mesh, with as many as 25 on strip. They were then sent to a factory for cutting and mounting on postcards. This refillable ink bottle was extensively in use in the early 1900's, firstly with the nib pen and then with the fountain pen. Both these pens required to be refreshed with ink as they had no long term self storage capacity. The requirement, before the 1970's, for all legal documents, wills and heath certificates etc. forms had to be signed with penned ink and not biro(1950's onward). This caveat was to prevent forgeries (signatures) from ocurring. Hand writing experts can clearly distinguish forgeries because by using nibs, the "natural" and distinctive hand inflections whilst forming the signiture cannot be replicated by forgers.This item is significant to the Kiewa Valley because it details that even in the rural sector,(Kiewa Valley) the legal requirements of the day had to be adhered to. This was even at a time when in the rural areas a "man's word and handshake" was his bond", especially between neighbours or others in a small rural region. This however was not the case for Government Departments , banks and the hospital. Mary Ellen Dunbar nee Johns 1873 - 1936, Mary was born in Walhalla, married Hugh Dunbar at Traralgon 1900 and had 3 sons. Hugh's daughter from his 1st marriage, Ada was blind and she was well cared for by Mary Ellen and later her brothers.After Hugh died 1910 she moved to Bentleigh ( East Brighton) and joined the Methodist Congregation Mary was appointed Trustee of the the Bentleigh Recreation Ground 1914 - the other Trustees were men. The family moved to a farm in Carlsruhe near Kyneton 1920. Mary is buried in Kyneton. St Andrew's Kirk faces into Sturt St, but this photograph is taken at an unusual angle from Dawson St. Architecturally this church is of great importance being part of the group of churches in Dawson St which includes St Patrick Cathedral, and the former Congregational and Baptist churches. The cast iron fence was erected after 1900. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. When Mrs Strange died some years ago, her extensive slide collection was sorted through and those relevant to Ballarat were gifted to the Ballarat Library.

LADIES PONY GIG – circa early 1900’s) The gig was built by T Rose, North Melbourne. Australian coachbuilders adopted American designs and modified these to suit local conditions, eg mudguards added for muddy country roads. As roads improved, lighter and faster designs were made. These gigs were more comfortable than the normal farm cart / town cart (see nearby butcher’s cart), as they were often sprung for comfort rather than carrying heavy weights. Amelia attended Ormiston Girls' School in Mont Albert soon after its opening in 1900. Her mother was Eleanor Mills, youngest daughter of Robert Shortbridge Mills and Ann Lovelady. In the early 1900’s Charles Ernest Barrie and his brother Ted were in partnership in a Chaff cutting and Ha y processing Mill on the corner of Station and Brooklyn road Melton South. By 1906 Charles Ernest and James Edwin were in partnership in the Station Road mill when a connecting rail line across Brooklyn Road for a siding was constructed to the Melton Railway Station. In 1911 the Mill’s letterhead shows C.E. BARRIE Hay Pressing and Chaff Cutting Mills. This is a unique item of band history. Here we have a circular that was sent around to the citizens of Richmond advising them to check the identity of their collectors to make sure they weren't from the rival band! The Richmond City Band was formed in 1900 but only lasted another 30 years. The rival band was the Richmond Boys' Band. The circular also outlines the success of the band in competitions as well as the amount of money it has raised for charities. This circular presents a window on the past activities of the band which is special considering records of the band are few and far between - their band hall was destroyed by fire in 1926.This circular is significant as a record of the activities of the Richmond City Band. This booklet contains the address given by the Rev. W. Gray Dixon in 1909 at St. Paul’s Christchurch to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. It was published at the request of the General Assembly and the proceeds of the sale of the booklet went into Presbyterian Church funds. The Rev. William Gray Dixon was born in Scotland and was the Presbyterian Minister at St. John’s Warrnambool from 1889 to 1900. In 1900 he went to New Zealand to St. David’s Church, Auckland and later to Dunedin. Rev, Gray Dixon was the author of several publications relating to Presbyterian Church history and activities. This booklet was sent from Auckland by Rev. Gray Dixon to Marcus Saltau, his friend in Warrnambool. Marcus Saltau (1869-1945)followed his father in the produce business in Warrnambool and expanded it to include management of the Warrnambool tramway (which took freight from the town to the port) and a shipping business that had its own vessels and an interstate and international trade. Marcus Saltau was prominent in Warrnambool’s community as a Councillor, Mayor and a politician (Upper House Member for the Western Province 1924-1940). He was a founding member of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Company, concerned with the establishment of the Nestles Factory at Dennington and a Warrnambool Hospital committee member and Chairman for over 30 years. The Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward and Marcus Saltau House at the Warrnambool Hospital survived as important community buildings for many years. This little booklet is of high significance as it is connected to two important Warrnambool people of the past – the Rev. William Gray Dixon and Marcus Saltau. It is the only Gray Dixon piece of writing that the Historical Society possesses and it is of double significance when it is noted that Marcus Saltau, the owner of the booklet was a friend of Gray Dixon’s, and was also a most important person in Warrnambool’s history. This is a soft-cover booklet of 22 pages. The cover which is completely detached and very torn is grey-coloured with dark blue and grey ornamental scrolls and shields around the title of the book. The book contains a portrait of John Calvin, three black and white photographs of places in Geneva, the music of a song, ‘The Marseillaise of the Reformation’ and some verse. The book was stapled but the staples have been removed. The pages are made of lightweight parchment paper. The illustrations have been glued in. The text is a publication of an address given by the author, Rev. W. Gray Dixon to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in 1909. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . James Steward was born in 1830 at Bury-St-Edmonds, Suffolk, England, and was educated in the brewing of ale before he boarded the American ship, the James L. Logert, bound for Australia in 1852. He made his way to the Bendigo diggings where he soon won his share of the precious metal until 1857 when he purchased a brewery in Letherby's Rd, Sailors Gully. Single cylinder horizontal petrol engine mounted on a 4 wheeled trolley. Two flywheels, one either side, no pulley. Galvanised cylindrical fuel tank mounted on a wooden box in front. Box contains a battery and ignition coil. Trolley has cast iron wheels and is designed for pulling by hand. Painted red and grey. Probably a power source for farm machinery. On a brass plate fixed to the cylinder. The Tawonga School was a weatherboard building built on 8 acres of land catering for children from the surrounding grazing farms to ride their horses to school. It opened on 27th July 1880. The original school building and records were erased by fire in 1900. The Tawonga hall was used until 1910 when 3 acres of land was donated by Frank Cooper. It still operates today (2015) with its numbers having fluctuated over the years with the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme, tobacco farming and now tourism. The Tawonga community published a cook book to celebrate the school's centenary.This book may have also been used as a fund raiser.The Tawonga school celebrated its centenary with a cookbook with contributions from the community. This indicates that the school was very proud of reaching its centenary and the community co-operated with each other to develop this book.This book is a good source of the names of people who lived in Tawonga in 1980.Yellow book with brown writing and sketch of school held together with brown hard plastic binding. This insulator disk for the high voltage carrying electrical cables was manufactured in 1964 and used by the SEC Vic (Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme) from that date until late 1900's. It was used to connect high voltage cables to their "towers" going from various Hydro Generators to and from power "stations". During this time period, high quality "cable" insulators were manufactured in Japan. In an earlier time they would have been sourced from Europe or England. After the 1950's the sourcing of electrical hardware was being influenced by the lower costs obtainable from Japan. Later on other Asian sources also became available.The need for a mountainous and a large area of operational requirements, such as the SEC Vic Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme, to distribute the electricity produced in the Victorian Alps to the major users required power transmission lines to "carry" high above the sometimes inaccessible land mass electricity generated at the power stations to the various sub stations along the valleys and ranges to flatter populated regions. The significance of this insulation "high voltage" disk to the Kiewa Valley region relates to the impact of modern technology (at that time) upon a mainly rural environment. These power lines are a stark visual "show" of the impact that the "Scheme" has on the mostly rural landscape of the Kiewa Valley and what a boost of "modern" equipment into the area has taken place. The "Hydro Scheme" had facilitated the transition of a semi rural area to an advanced rural region within a shorter time frame, than would have taken under "normal" evolutionary time. The speed of information of all "new technology" had a relatively slow assimilation rate before the SEC Kiewa Hydro Scheme came to those living in the then quieter rural communities. This high voltage (330 KV) insulation disk is made from non conductive porcelain stoneware. It is highly polished brown in colour and has a clip fastening for the high voltage cable to be attached to. This disk was hit by lightning and the burn marks are quite noticeable. The top metal connector has a "mushroom" extension jutting below the semi cone like insulation disk.
