After a quiet period, interest in bookplates in Australia began to increase in the early 1970s, Entrepreneurial art and book collectors such as Edwin Jewell and others commissioned multiple Bookplate designs from a range of well known fine artists. At a 1997 meeting in Melbourne of the Ephemera Society of Australia Edwin Jewell and others announced the formation of the Australian Bookplate Society. Photo shows two W2 class trams in Victoria Parade, possibly at the intersection with Brunswick St, given the tramway correspondence box on the nearest pole. W2 510, (City) is fitted with a route number box, while W2 549 (Mont Albert) is not fitted. Both trams have auxiliary destinations boards hanging from the driver's cabins. The ornate centre poles are shown. Though the inscription date is 1930 when route numbers were being rolled out for Melbourne's trams. Photograph of Flinders St looking east from Swanston St - shows the entrance to Flinders St station prior to the construction of the current building. In the view are one cable tram, many pedestrians and some horse-drawn vehicles. A hoarding on the left hand side possibly indicates work is underway on the new station building. A sign on the pole advises that cable trams went to Spencer St for a penny and for 3d to Port Melbourne or South Melbourne. In the background are buildings for Sargood Bros, Thomas Whitelaw Home Decorators, The Hub, a sign on the Young & Jackson Hotel advertising a Women's Exhibition. In particular it centres on Jim Medhurst the only former player present from the Greensborough team that won the inaugural 1921 premiership. Jim Medhurst's ancestors were a pioneering family in the district. The Elverland, a New Zealand barque, was in Victoria in August 1906. It was wrecked in January 1907 near the Three Kings Islands (Manawatāwhi) on its way to Auckland from Newcastle with a cargo of coal. Early 20th C. image of crew members on board ship. It is thought that the basins were used to collect their meals as a way of ensuring minimum spillage when the vessel was under way. The Barque Crocodile out of Liverpool is documented in an Annual report as donating 15 shillings and sixpence from the crew towards the building fund for the Mission Building.
