During construction, commentators described the house as being in the ‘Elizabethan style’. The architectural style of the exterior, with its innovatory use of red brick and Italian tiles was more influenced by American models. Edward George Kilburn, of Ellerker & Kilburn, designed Byram for the industrialist George Ramsden in 1888.This is an original small photograph of this historic Kew mansion with provenance by descent from the first owners of the house.The main entrance to Tara Hall (previously named Byram, Goathland and Lowan). The entrance, through a porte-cochère, was located on the east side of the house. Inscription reverse: KH-323 Tara Hall once stood on Studley Pk Road on vast landscaped gardens. Black and white photo of St. John's Catholic Church, Mitcham erected in 1872. Two wings at rear give the church a cruciform shape were added in 1888. This building became decrepit gradually and prior to its demolition in the 1950's, the end walls of the crossings were supported with heavy 'flying shores'. The water tower on the corner of Pakenham St and High Street Echuca, was designed by Sir John Monash, who was an innovator in the use of reinforced concrete. The tower cost £2,973 and was completed in 1915. It is 108 feet high and holds 150,000 gallons. it was originally connected to the steam powered pumping plant at Echuca East. John Monash was a war hero at Gallipoli in 1915 and also went on to be the Manager of the Victorian State Electricity Commission. Monash University was named after him.The water tower was a revolutionary design in 1915. It also brought tapped water to people's homes. Sir John Monash made a huge contribution to engineering and social concepts, which was why he was knighted. As well as these contributions to social development, he was also a war hero.Black and white postcard featuring the water tower in Packenham Street. The photograph was taken from Alton Reserve. Ref: Alan Holt records - This property was part of Lot 25 in the Windsor Park Estate which was subdivided in 1883. The house of 12 squares was built in 1888 for John Abernethy, an engineer. He also built 62 Windsor Crescent as a coachhouse and cottage. 1888-1891: Owners = John & Sarah Abernethy. John Abernethy died while on a trip to Hong Kong in 1891. 1891-1909: Owner = Mrs Sarah Abernethy 1910-1917: Owner = H Jenkinson The properties at 62 and 64 Windsor Crescent were separated during WW1 (by H Jenkinson). (Source: The First One Hundred Years by R.S. Medew and I.M. Bowman - A History of The Medew Family in Victoria - page 11 extracts) - Charles Turner Medew (1829-1915 ) arrived in Victoria from England in 1857. He eventually settled in Ringwood as the original purchaser of Crown Allotment 32, Section C, where he built his own home in 1888 and became well known locally "for his fine building work and stone masonry." ... "In his retirement, Charles Medew experimented with model helicopters. About 1910, at the age of 80 years, he was able to raise these helicopters to such a point of efficiency that, just with an elastic wound propeller, when released they could fly upwards to the height of the large oak trees." ... "(Also) In 1910, Charles obtained plans and made a model of the Wright Brothers' biplane entirely of wood, with laminated wood propeller and driven by twisted elastic bands." This model remained in his workshop for many years after his death and with his family's permission was eventually placed in the Melbourne Science Museum.3 pencil drawings showing assembled parts and sectional views of a model helicopter. -

These items come from the estates of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and her sister Agnes (1915-1993) were the daughters of law clerk Arthur Ardlie and his wife Ethel, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. All of the documents relate to St. Ann’s Convent/School in Warrnambool. The Sisters of Mercy established St Mary’s Wyton school in 1872 and the name was changed to St.Ann’s in 1888. Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie would have been particularly interested in the convent building established around the original building of Wyton as this building had been the home of John Ardlie and had been sold to the Sisters of Mercy by their grandfather, William Ardlie. Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie had been pupils at St. Ann’s School. Some of the documents relate to the orphanage established at St. Ann’s in 1881 when an extension was added to the convent for that purpose. The orphanage was closed when a similar institution, Nazareth House, was opened in Ballarat.
