Reverend Edwin Iredale Watkin, D.D. (1839-1916) was born in Sydney and spent his early life in New Zealand before coming to Australia . He began his Wesleyan ministry in 1859. He was a leading member of the Royal Geographical Society of Victoria. He had a winning personality and was held in high regard and affection by the communities in worked in. The notepaper says: "In commemoration of the heroic deeds of the men of ANZAC at GALLIPOLI in 1915 and in recognition of the great debt owed by all Australians. With the compliments of the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia." It was given to Legatee Gordon Beith. His son and daughter presented it to Legacy. The Anzac Commemorative Medallion was instituted 1967. It was awarded to surviving members of the Australian forces who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula, or in direct support of the operations from close off shore, at any time during the period from the first Anzac Day in April 1915 to the date of final evacuation in January 1916. Several boathouses were built in Kew and Fairfield in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They included Chipperfield’s ‘Moorings’ and floating pontoon. The substantial two-storey house was named the Moorings, and incorporated an upper storey residence. The Moorings was almost washed away in the 1916 floods, and in 1934 almost totally submerged when the Yarra River rose 26 feet in 14 hours. Following the 1934 flood, the house was restored. The floating pontoon, sometimes referred to as a ‘kiosk’ or ‘canteen’, was used to store canoes. Both were removed in 1972 for the construction of the Eastern Freeway.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. This was originally built as a State Savings Bank of Victoria branch in 1916. The first manager was Mr Campbell Cameron. On 26 August 1990, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) entered into an agreement with the Treasurer of Victoria for a merger with the State Bank of Victoria (SBV). All former State banks were given new signage in November 1992. The CBA operated the branch for a relatively short period of time with the branch closing in 2000. Community pressure for a local bank resulted in the Bendigo Bank opening a branch on the site in 2002. Henry Sebire returned to Guernsey on the "Caledonian" in 1888. He came back to Australia via sailing ship to Jersey and then to the coast of France. Travelled by train to Paris and Marseilles, and left for Australia on "Oceania". Arrived in Melbourne in December 1888. The "Oceania" was built in France in 1884 - 4162 tons, barque rigged, 415 feet long, 585 HP. Sank in the English Channel on 24th September 1916. Trooper John William Lockey (1892-1978) was born in Durham, England. He enlisted 24/11/1914 in Bendigo in the 4th Lighthorse with the service number 946. At the time of enlistment he was a miner. He was wounded at Gallipoli by a bomb wound to the foot on 25/8/1915 and was subsequently invalided to Australia on 17/9/1915. Frank Augustus O'Neill (1885- ) was born in Bendigo. He enlisted into the 4th Lighthorse on 12/12/1914 with the service number 1415. He returned to Australia in March 1916 and was medically discharged due to a double hernia.Attached to card 1 brass 5 pointed star & 1 brass button showing a crest with lion & unicorn. Medal presented for their service to their country and local district to returning local servicemen from the Great War (First World War) by the Shire of Eltham Welcome Home Committee. This medal was presented to W.H. Orford. Spr. W.H. Orford From Eltham We Honour You Great War 1914 - 1919 Whilst the war ended in 1918, many servicemen did not return home till 1919. ORFORD William Henry - Munitions Worker Number 542 William Henry Orford enlisted 1 Feb 1916 and embarked for France 25 May 1916. He was a Tunneler and was part of an operation of a group of British miners (known as "Claykickers" or “Manchester Moles”) recruited during World War I to tunnel underneath no man's land and set bombs below the German front at the Battle of Messines in June 1917. 10,000 German soldiers were killed instantly after the detonation of explosives beneath their lines. The story was depicted in the film "The War Below". Doug Orford, William's nephew recalls William saying they could hear the Germans as they tunnelled below them within metres. A month later He was wounded in action with a gun shot wound to the scalp and face in July 1917. A book of drawings and photos published about the trenches in Europe in 1917. Put together by the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces and published by a British publisher. Reproductions of official photographs and cartoons and sketches by members of the A.I.F. Photos show life in the trenches and the war zones, including Ypres, Hill 60, Hindenburg line, Bapaume, Menin Road, Zonnebeke and more. Plus conducting battle operations, Boche prisoners, ruined towns and churches, and the wounded awaiting transport. Most of the drawings are humorous. It is incomplete, the back cover is missing and the pages are only from Page 1 to 24 and 57 to 127. Information from the Australian War Memorial archives says it should have been 157 pages long. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Sometimes called a sweetheart postcard, it was a way of sending thoughts to the troops overseas. The printing on the rear implies it was sent with a hamper to the troops overseas. The text and poem on the front says : 'Like the boomerang may you quickly come back. / To wish you a Speedy, Safe and Sure Return. This hamper is sent you with greetings sincere, And the hope that its contents will bring you "good cheer"; While you're doing your bit, we are thinking of you And we'll welcome you home when you've seen the job through, In the meantime just send us a message to say You've received this all right if you find it OK.' The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-25: William and Alice Richardson: Alice Barnard married William Richardson at Hawthorn, April 1887. Alice's father Fredrick was a Model Maker employed at the Melbourne Museum. Alice died in childbirth having her third child, Joseph in 1892. Baby Joseph died in April 1893, eight months later at Rhyll. 466-26: The Forrest Family: The Forrest family were amongst our early settlers. The Forrest Caves are named after them. Matthew Forrest arrived by dray from Tarradale on 9th November 1869. He died in 1916 at the age of 75. Presented to 1st Battalion, The Royal Western Australia Regiment by Field Marshall HRH The Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh at a parade held at the Western Australian Cricket Association Ground, East Perth on 25 November 1962. The Royal Western Australia Regiment was formed on 1 July 1960 from the amalgamation of the following existing infantry battalions in the State at the time :- • 11th/44th Infantry Battalion (The City of Perth Regiment) • 16th Infantry Battalion (The Cameron Highlanders of Western Australia) • 28th Infantry Battalion (The Swan Regiment) At the above presentation of colours to the new battalion, the Colours of the former battalions (four sets of Queen's and Regimental colours) were trooped through the ranks of the battalion and marched off the parade for the last time. These former colours were subsequently laid up in the undercroft at the State War Memorial, King's Park on 29 November 1964. These were transferred to the Army Museum of WA in 1988 as part of the Bicentenary Colours Project. (Refer to Items 4-12 for individual records of these colours) 1st Battalion, The Royal Western Australia Regiment was renumbered 16th Battalion effective from 1st January 1966 as part of a move to reintroduce the old battalion numbers back into the State Regimental system 16th Battalion, The Royal Western Australia Regiment was presented with a new set of Colours on 27 October 2002. The original 1962 Colours were formally handed over for safe keeping to the Army Museum of Western Australia on 3 November 2002. Battle Honours allocated to the State Infantry Regiments created under the CMF reorganisation in July 1960 were promulgated in Australian Army Order 85/1962. These were a consolidation of the battle honours awarded to the various individual battalions that were amalgamated to form the new regiments. Royal blue with gold and red fringes. In the centre the main device from the regimental badge consisting of a black swan upon a pair of crossed rifles on a red background, within a circle inscribed "THE ROYAL WESTERN AUSTRALIA REGIMENT". The whole enclosed within a wreath of Australian wattle and surmounted by the Crown. Across the lower portion of the wreath a scroll inscribed with the regimental motto "VIGILANT". This bust was commissioned and made in the years before Holroyd's retirement from the bench. It is not known precisely when the bust entered the Library collection or the circumstances of its execution and commission. Justice Holroyd (1828-1916) was a judge of the Supreme Court for 25 years, after a successful career at the bar. Charles Web Gilbert (1867-1925) was a largely self taught sculptor, only tackling the medium of marble in the years before World War One. After the war he made a number of War Memorials, but his best known work is his statue of Matthew Flinders, the explorer, in Swanston Street.The portrait of Justice Holroyd is of interest as an unusual depiction and commemoration of a Judge. The medallion is a 1951 Commemorative being 100 years of Government and discovery of gold in Victoria. The winner K.M. Mcleod is believed to be Kenneth Meadowbank McCleod. He enlisted initially in 1915 but was discharged medically unfit in 1916, re enlisted in 1917 No 3840 and served in the 4th LH Regt, discharged from the AIF on 6.12.1919. Refer Cat No 1805P. There were two Billiard Tables in the Soldiers Memorial Institute in what was called the Billiard room. This was a source of income for the Bendigo Branch for some 70 years. One table was sold in 1967 as usage had declined and the last one was sold in 1994..1) Medallion circular bronze, front depicts 2 gold miners, oround outside is text, centre is engraved with details of who was presented with the item.
