Nicholas Ruthen was a student at Bulla Primary School when the children were celebrating Arbor Week in April 1989. He had planted a tree and had placed a guard around it to give the young plant protection. The photograph was taken in 1989 when the children in grades 4 an 5 attended a school camp at Gundiwindi, which is in the Yarra Valley on the border of Wandin and Nth. Silvan. At the camp the children were acquainted with the skills used by the local indigenous people. The children the photograph attempted to construct a bark shelter along the lines of those build by the local indigenous people. The photograph was taken in 1989 when students in Grades 4 and 5 from Bulla Primary School attended a school camp at Gundiwindi Camp. The camp is in the Yarra Valley area on the border of North Wandin and Silvan. The children and adults were at a working bee at Bulla Primary School and this group were concentrating on repairing some of the school's playground equipment. The children from Bulla Primary School were taken on an excursion to Gellibrand hill Park which is a short distance from the School. The emphasis on the day's excursion was to identify the native fauna in the park as well as the vegetation.The property was originally settled by the Greene family in 1843. In 1980 the State Government purchased the property and it is now one of the state's parks where the natural vegetation has gradually been restored on the property. Captain Cook's Cottage was dismantled in his village in England and rebuilt in Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens in the 1930s. Since then it has been an attraction for many visitors although there is little relationship between Captain Cook as he never set foot anywhere in Victoria. The police flew the helicopter and landed in the Bulla Primary School ground. On that occasion a policeman spoke to the students and informed them about the role of the police helicopter and also outlined the physical aspects of the craft. In this photograph the children were lined up so that each one was able to see inside the helicopter. The children gained an understanding of the importance of the Police Rescue Helicopter in safety.
