Photograph, Gulline Brothers Store, Grant Street Bacchus Marsh looking North towards Main Street, circa 1920s
Gulline Brothers was a general store in Bacchus Marsh located in Grant Street, on the corner of Grant Street and Sydney Street. The store was originally opened by John Jory in about 1890. At that time it was advertised as being located on Maddingley Road. It was later taken over by Horace Hussey and William Grant Morton trading as Hussey and Morton, and later solely as Morton's. In the early 1920s it was sold to the Gulline Brothers and traded under this name for many years. The building has had multiple uses and occupants since the Gulline Brothers ran their business there. The building is still standing today (2024) and is shared by three different businesses. An image of a significant late nineteenth century commercial building which still survives in Bacchus Marsh.Black and white photographic printroads and streets bacchus marsh vic., maddingley road bacchus marsh vic., grant street bacchus marsh vic., shops bacchus marsh vic., gulline brothers general store bacchus marsh vic., general stores bacchus marsh vic. -

Postcard - Postcard Folder, scenes, Valentine & Sons Co. Publishing Ltd, Warrnambool Photographic Souvenir, Early-to-mod 20th century
This postcard folder is one of three in a set of postcards that were published in Victoria, Australia, and collected together. The Valentine Publishing Co. Pty. Ltd. produced this folder. Valentine and Sons was a printing and photography business based in Dundee, Scotland, and in Canada. In the early 1900s, at the height of the postcard craze, the firm published large numbers of postcards in the U.K., Canada, U.S., Australia and South Africa. From around 1900 or earlier, the firm bought many lithographic images for its postcards from local and national photographers who sold publishing rights to Valentines, and the business was famous for publishing photographs of popular sites worldwide. Postcard titles in this folder include many of those in the Rose postcard folders plus the following titles that are not duplicated. . Municipal Buildings and Post Office . Soldiers’ Memorial . Hopkins River . The Cliffs at Shelly Beach . The Road to Sandy Beach . The Breakwater and Pier This Valentine postcard folder was produced in Australia. It includes pictures from the early-to-mid 20th century. It is one of three in a set, with images of the same locations as other images in our collection but at different periods in time. Each postcard records a moment in history and is significant as a way to compare and show the changes in the local environment and community, building a story of the local history. The images record changes in the coastline, land, bay, buildings and other structures, roads, transportation and even the fashions of the times.Postcard folder, Valentine Publishing, cream cover. One of a set of three displaying images of Warrnambool and district around the mid-20th century. Print on the front and back covers is in brown ink. The front has an image of two laughing kookaburras on a branch, three address lines and an outline for a postage stamp. The back cover has the publisher’s details and a line for a return address. The cover opens like a book, and then the double-sided, Z-folded page of photographs drops downward. Titles are printed below each of the fifteen black and white photographs inside. The folder is secured on the back cover by placing a tab into a slot. The folder was produced by The Valentine Publishing Co. Pty. Ltd. Photograph, 'Glenfine' Shearing Shed, 1890
In July 1840, Glenfine, consisting of 31,440 acres, was acquired by Thomas Downie. In March 1842 the 'Right of Run' was taken up by Thomas Chirnside who with an imported stallion 'Delapre' ran a horse stud. He apparently lived here for ten years and employed a gardener with a wife and five children from Hobart, Tasmania. Only some blocks of stone and a few trees remain of their homestead. In 1853 the property was transferred to Dr. John Chirnside, an elder brother of Thomas Chirnside. In 1857, William Rowe of Naringal purchased Glenfiine where he and his family lived until 1904 when it was bought by Richard Howell's estate. It was then 39,000 acres. The present house was built by the Rowes in 1872 of bluestone quarried on the property with a cement render overall. The architect was H.R. Casselli. Gold was found on the property and by 1898 the township of Hollybush was first reported, situated at either side of the front entrance, on the Cressy Road. The land for the township was given by William Rowe. In 1911 R.C. Howell, son of Richard Howell, became the owner, followed by his son in 1960. By 1990 Hollybush had a population of 426 persons. All of the early history of Glenfine, documents etc., were destroyed when Naringal homestead was burnt down in 1944. Glenfine was classified by the National Trust in 1974 and is on the Heritage Commission Register. Mounted black and white image of a large group of men and boys in front of a weatherboard shearing shed. The men are each holding a pair of hand shears. Photograph - Wodonga Poultry Suppliers, Late 1940s
Wodonga Poultry Suppliers was established in the late 1940s by Albert (Bert) Elkington in partnership with his father-in-law Artie Phillips and Aubrey Gilbert. From the beginning they had an eye on the export market. Artie (Arthur) Phillips sold Bert and Aubrey the land and became the third partner. In 1945 Aubrey and Bert each gained a repatriation loan and scored £500. They cleared the land, made the bricks by hand, built freezers and killing pens and started killing and selling to the local trade. By 1947 they had completed the first large freezer, packing room and killing sheds all to the specifications of the Department of Primary Industry. They gained an export licence and began exports to England under the brand name “Donga”. By 1950, 120,000 poultry and 50,000 pairs of rabbits annually left the Athol St, Wodonga premises for overseas markets. Unfortunately the business was adversely impacted by the English wharf strike, with large stock losses and changes to the English poultry trade. Wodonga Poultry Suppliers made changes to the plant to cater for meat export to the ready markets of England, Greece, the Persian Gulf and Japan. By the 1962, Wodonga Poultry Suppliers were exporting poultry, rabbits, hares, lamb, mutton, pie offal and quarter beef to the UK, mutton to Greece and veal sides to Bahrain. The business had outgrown the original works in Athol St and larger and improved facilities were needed. Donga Meats Pty Ltd was set up in October 1963. In 1967 Bert Elkington sold his share of the company to Consolidated Meat Holdings and came back for a time as a stock controller. He passed away in Wodonga in 1993. These images are significant because they document an early major export industry established in Wodonga, Victoria. Container - Roy SCHMIDT Collection - Cotton Flour Bags (3)
[1] Three Bears Porridge Flaked Oatmeal Bag: This textile bag originates from Canadian Cereal Mills Ltd., which marketed "Three Bears" flaked oatmeal. Popular in the early 1900s to mid-century, this product combined functional packaging with a child-friendly incentive — a cut-out cloth doll. The practice of printing toys, games, or clothing patterns on flour or oat sacks was a common marketing strategy, encouraging reuse and appealing to families during times when thrift and creativity were essential, especially during the Depression and wartime years. The Three Bears brand played off the enduring popularity of children’s nursery tales, while the doll encouraged children (and parents) to reuse packaging creatively. This object captures a unique intersection of food marketing, household resourcefulness, and early 20th-century domestic life. [2] Mammy Self-Raising Flour Bag: This item is a mid-20th-century Australian flour bag, branded “Mammy Oven Puff”, produced by A. Mammy Products Pty Ltd in West Footscray, Victoria. The use of the name "Mammy" and the caricatured illustration draws on a now widely recognised and offensive racial stereotype originating from American minstrel culture, commonly used in product branding in the early-to-mid 20th century. While the bag reflects a specific period in Australian domestic and commercial packaging history, it also exemplifies racially insensitive advertising that would be considered inappropriate and harmful by today’s standards. Such items are preserved today in museum collections to help document past social attitudes, consumer culture, and the evolution of racial representation in advertising. [3] Bandung Blue Triangle Brand Flour Bag: This bag represents a mid-20th-century Australian flour export product, particularly aimed at international markets such as Indonesia (as indicated by "Bandung"). The “Blue Triangle Brand” was likely a registered trademark used by a Melbourne-based flour mill engaged in both local and overseas trade. The use of durable cloth bags for bulk flour was common prior to the widespread adoption of paper and plastic packaging. These bags were often reused domestically for household textiles, clothing patterns, or storage. The export reference (Bandung) underscores Australia's historical agricultural trade ties with Southeast Asia, especially in wheat and flour exports. – Roy SCHMIDT resided with his siblings Mabel and Jack at ‘Parklands’ 85 Lake Avenue Natimuk home of Heinrich Friederick ‘Heiny’ & Minna Christina SUDHOLZ nee LANGE and their children Louis, Sophie, Alma, Lena (Roy's Mother), Florence 'Florrie' and Edward ‘Ted’.[1] Three Bears Porridge Flaked Oatmeal Bag: A vintage cloth oatmeal bag printed with black ink on both sides. One side is branded with "Three Bears Porridge – Flaked Oatmeal", showing an image of three bears behind a gate, referencing the well-known “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” fairytale. The opposite side features a printed cut-out doll design, showing a young girl with curly hair holding a bouquet of flowers, intended to be sewn into a stuffed toy. Instructions note that the reverse side (the doll’s back) could be obtained from a second bag. The design combines product branding with a promotional activity for children, typical of early- to mid-20th-century grocery packaging aimed at reuse. [2] Mammy Self-Raising Flour Bag: A small vintage cloth flour bag with printed branding in faded red, blue, and black inks. The front of the bag features a central image of a caricatured smiling African American woman wearing a headscarf. The text is unevenly faded but legible in parts. The bag has a rectangular shape with an open top edge and signs of previous use, including creasing and some fraying at the corners. [3] Bandung Blue Triangle Brand Flour Bag: A large, rectangular vintage cloth flour bag made of cream-coloured calico or cotton. The front of the bag is printed in bold blue ink with branding and export information. It prominently features a large triangular logo reading “Blue Triangle Brand” and numerous lines of text in block and stylised fonts. The bag is open at the top with frayed edges, suggesting it was once machine-stitched shut and later opened.[1] Three Bears Porridge Flaked Oatmeal Bag: Front side (branding side): "THREE BEARS Porridge – FLAKED OATMEAL" "7 Lbs. Net." “Packed and guaranteed by Canadian Cereal Mills Ltd., Toronto” Reverse side (doll pattern): "This is the Front for Three Bears Cut-out Doll" "In order to complete this Doll it will be necessary to obtain the Back Design from another Bag of Three Bears Rolled Oats or Oatmeal." [2] Mammy Self-Raising Flour Bag: Main product name: “MAMMY OVEN PUFF SELF-RAISING FLOUR” Additional text: “The Only Creamed Flour” “Prepared with phosphate aerator” “A. MAMMY PRODUCTS PTY. LTD., Sunshine Rd., West Footscray. Phone: FW 7321” “7 LBS. NET” (near top edge, very faded) [3] Bandung Blue Triangle Brand Flour Bag: The bag is printed with the following: “10270” “G.W.C | H.L” “BANDUNG” “BEST AUSTRALIAN” “BLUE TRIANGLE BRAND” (inside the triangle logo) “GROWER & GRINDERS” (curved around the logo) “Patent Roller” “MELBOURNE” “FLOUR” “50 LBS. GROSS WHEN PACKED” These inscriptions indicate that this flour bag was manufactured in Melbourne, Australia, and was likely exported to Bandung, Indonesia.farm equipment, flour, milling, oats -
