Photograph, Symington Brewery, Hopetoun, near Bacchus Marsh 1883
The family of William Symington arrived in Melbourne in 1855. By 1858 they had come to Bacchus Marsh and built a house at Hopetoun a few kilometres east of the town. A brewery next to the house was also built around this time. It was a licensed brewery between 1862 and 1886. The elder William Symington died in March 1867 and the brewery was then operated by his son the younger William Symington for a number of years. It ceased operations sometime before 1900. Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The image shows the brewery and house which belonged to the Symington family of Hopetoun, near Bacchus Marsh. The house is a timber structure with two chimneys and a front verandah. The front yard of the house is enclosed by a timber fence. At the front of the fence can be seen a dog kennel. The brewery building is timber and brick. On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. Photograph, Bullocks in paddock, near Bacchus Marsh 1883
Transportation of goods and material by bullock teams was a common feature of life in nineteenth century Australia. Bullock teams could comprise more than twenty bullocks to haul very large and heavy loads. They were the equivalent of large trucks on the roads of today. It is not known who the man in this picture is or his precise location. This photo is presumed to be of a professional carrier with some of his bullocks taking a rest between jobs. Many Australian country towns have very wide main streets to allow for large bullock teams to turn without having to unharness and reharness the animals.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The image shows a group of seven shorthorn bullocks in a paddock. Their yokes and a chain can be seen. Standing near them is a bearded man holding a bullock team leader's whip. He is dressed neatly and is wearing a very smart hat. On the hilltop stands a large hut, possibly with a bark shingle roof. A chimney is at the end of the dwelling. On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. Photo. 108 Elizabeth St. Melbourne. COPIES CAN BE OBTAINED AT ANY TIME. On the back: LIGHT & TRUTH inscribed on a banner surmounted by a representation of the rising sun. Photograph, Group of women at a farmhouse near Bacchus Marsh 1883
This image is one of several family group portraits taken by Stevenson and McNicoll on rural properties. The identity of this group of women and the young child and the location where the image was taken has not been identified. They are presumably members of a family group.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The image shows a family group of four women and one young child. It is unclear if the child is a boy or a girl, due to the custom of clothing young male children in dresses. The women are sitting or standing in two groups. To the right stands an older woman in a starched white apron, perhaps indicating that she is the housekeeper. The group on the left is of one woman standing and two women seated, one reading a newspaper or magazine. The young child reaches out one arm to her, perhaps for reassurance. The family in this image and the precise location of the property have not been identified. The dwelling consists of two structures, one single storeyed cottage, which is perhaps the older part, and an adjoining weatherboard house with a prominent chimney at the front. The cottage has a shingled verandah partially covered by corrugated iron, which also covers the roof. Trees, a climbing vine and shrubs form a rather unkempt garden. Domestic object - Ironstone China Wash bowl and jug, 1900 - 1930
Ironstone china pieces were common domestic items during the 19th to mid 20th century in many Australian households. This kind of china is not porcelain but porous earthenware, made of clay mixed with feldspar. Patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire, England, it was an immediate success and became widely produced by a range of Staffordshire potters. J & G Meakin Pottery dates back to 1845 when James Meakin started a pottery business at Lane End in Staffordshire.nIn 1848 he moved the business to Hanley in Staffordshire, before retiring in 1852 and handing the business over to his two sons James and George, who carried on with the pottery, trading as J & G Meakin. The "SOL" and sun face trademarks were registered in 1912. The firm was taken over by the Wedgwood Group in 1970. In 2000, production under the Meakin name ceased. W. H. Grindley was founded at the Newfield Pottery in 1880 by William Harry Grindley (principal partner). Mr Turner and Mr Alfred Meakin were also involved. Early advertisements stated that they produced Earthenware and Ironstone China - particularly for the Canadian, United States, South American and Australian markets. The mark on this jug was used from c1891 until 1925. W. H. Grindley China was manufactured until 1991, making it one of the last Stoke on Trent potteries. These items are representative of a common domestic item used by households in the Wodonga district and throughout Australia, many manufactured specifically for the Australian market.A white ironstone jug and bowl. The jug features a leaf design embossed on the surface. The bowl has a small circle pattern around the rim. They are not as set as the jug bears the mark W. H. Photograph is from the album of Ivy Child. The back view of the homestead is either the Kalorama homestead of Ivy's parents, Ted and Ethel Child or her grandfather, Matthew Francis Child. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. Photograph
Image appears to be of Army camp based near/at rural village with outlying buildings on Tarakan Island The 2/24th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army, which served during World War II .A unit of all-volunteers, it was formed in July 1940 from primarily Victorian volunteers and was known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. The Unit was granted the Freedom of the City by the Rural City of Wangaratta in 1996 and one of the first, if not the first, to receive this type of honour. Reproduced black and white photograph of two rows of long buildings with four men between one small building and two rows of tent like structures in the foreground.
