Blacksmith's Cottage and Forge
Lamp, 1900 (estimated)
This item type was used during the First World War throughout Europe. This item is an artillery siege lamp. It was used by artillery units. The lamps were powered by a single candle, the light being magnified by a lens. A shutter closes over the lens to give an illuminated vertical line. They were used originally in fortified siege artillery posititions as a general purpose lamp. They were also used as aiming lamps when they were placed in front of artillery posititions and used as a guide in aiming at night. Further research has suggested that this item may have been attached to bicycles for illuminating the way in the blackout. This item is considered rare and important. It is historically and technically siginficant at a national level. Painted black metal(tin) candle power, hand held or placed on flat area, open base so candle can be inserted and 'screwed' in, side door for lighting, fron magnifying glass, metal lens cover with vertical slit. There is considerable damage to the black paint in the external regions of the lamp.world war one, military, candle, artillery, europe, lamp, black, artillery siege lamp, artillery units, candle power, aiming lamp, wwi, 1900, australian war memorial, bike light, bike, bicycle, bicycle lamp, blackout -

Tool - Smoothing Plane
The left hand guides the plane over a plank and the right hand thrusts the plane forward. The plane would remove shavings of timber until smooth. This plane has been adapted and repaired . The adaptation to tongue and groove would allow the plane to cut a tongue and then swivel to cut a matching groove. The resulting joins gave a strong snug edge to edge fit of planks. These wide panels would be used for flooring, wall paneling or furniture e.g. table tops. Tongue and groove work would take time and require accuracy for a smooth finish. Today tongue and groove is bought pre-moulded. Oak smoothing plane with handle and adjustable blade. Adapted to make tongue and groove planking. Base not original. Repairs to throat. Handle split. Borer holes in handle. Wards on blade.plane, hand tools, carpenter's tools -

Tool - Auger bits X 13
Auger bits fit into the jaws of a hand brace (brace and bit), which is used to bore holes into wood. The tapered end, or tapered shank, fits into the brace, while the twisted shank and twisted point draw the bit into the wood. The twisted shank guides the bit into the wood, helping to remove chips produced by the cutters and enabling the user to bore deep straight holes. The collection pictured here includes two common patterns of twist bits: the ‘Jennings’ double twist pattern; and the ‘Irwin’ single twist pattern. Their finely pitched threaded points are typically used to cut hardwood timber.Set of thirteen auger bits, with tapered proximal ends and corkscrew spiraled distal ends. Some with tight and loose spiral patterns. Paint spots and surface rust.[size of each bit stamped on]churchill island, tool, auger bits -
