It is on the Historic Buildings Register, National Trust (Victoria). It is important as a substantial and very early stone cottage. The house is now open to the public. It also provides short term accommodation - self contained apartments. Card produced for Christmas. It has a brief history of the Cottage inside.Thick textured paper, folded. This event was held on the 4th March 1990 and the 3rd Military District Band performed. The concert was held in March for many years. Over 600 ladies from metropolitan and country Victoria attended. The label says that the bandleader was Major Malcolm Bell and Donald Cant was the singer. The first photo shows a light livery when it was new in 1939 and the second a darker livery, the late 1940s. The first photo shows some possible damage to the front bumper bar. This was the second MMTB tourist bus. Imported by MMTB Chairman Bell from Canada in 1939. The body was built by the Canadian Car Co. Because of WW2, it was put into normal passenger service in July 1940 and had a mundane existence from that time onwards. It was sold to Melbourne Brighton Bus Lines however they never used it. See Reg Item 5112 for a photo of the bus in poor condition. He is preparing to open an exterior door into a brick building. The caption below indicates he is about to deposit his takings and trip slips. It was the practice of MTOC that each time a return trip was completed, the conductor entered the Receiver's Office at the car house (usually at the suburban terminus) to pay-in. The coins were held in the conductor's jacket pockets, which may account for the bulge in his right pocket. The company was ever vigilant to the possibility that the conductor or a thief would steal his cash. This is a photograph taken of a newsprint photograph from an unnamed newspaper. In July 1873 a brass bell was erected at Flagstaff Hill specifically to call the rescue crew upon news of a shipwreck. ...This rocket launcher has fittings to mount it onto a lifeboat or similar vessel. Once mounted, a it would be fitted with a line-throwing rocket that would be launched from the vessel and aimed over the shipwreck. The line would be fixed to the ship in distress. A heavier line would then be sent out to the wrecked vessel and survivors would be hauled to safety. Its design suggests that it dates to the First World War ear of the 1910s. The coastline of South West Victoria is the site of over 600 shipwrecks and many lost lives; even in Warrnambool’s Lady Bay there were around 16 known shipwrecks between 1850 and 1905, with eight lives lost. Victoria’s Government responded to the need for lifesaving equipment and, in 1858, the provision of rocket and mortar apparatus was approved for the lifeboat stations. In 1859 the first Government-built lifeboat arrived at Warrnambool Harbour and a shed was soon built for it on the Tramway Jetty, followed by a rocket house in 1864 to safely store the rocket rescue equipment. In 1878 the buildings were moved to the Breakwater (constructed from 1874-1890), and in 1910 the new Lifeboat Warrnambool arrived with its ‘self-righting’ design. For almost a hundred years the lifesaving and rescue crews, mostly local volunteers, trained regularly to rehearse and maintain their rescue skills. They were summoned when needed by alarms, gunshots, ringing bells and foghorns. In July 1873 a brass bell was erected at Flagstaff Hill specifically to call the rescue crew upon news of a shipwreck. Some crew members became local heroes but all served an important role. Rocket apparatus was used as recently as the 1950s. This item is significant for its connection with maritime history and marine technology. Lifesaving has been an important part of the services performed coastal Victoria, including Warrnambool, in its very early days, supported by State and Local Government, and based on the methods and experience of Great Britain. In his glasshouse, he propagated and cultivated rhododendrons and camellias, and gathered rare species. He helped to form the National Rhododendron Garden at Olinda, providing many specimens from his beautiful garden. This photograph showing a group of people on the balcony of 'Folly Farm' was taken in 1914 and the cottage looks to have been newly built. It is believed there was a church on this site before the Norman Conquest as the Domesday Book mentions a St Michael's Church in the east of the ancient parish of Manchester. Much of the structure was re-constructed in Victorian times. The church with large windows in Perpendicular style. Buttresses were required with this type of building as the large window area reduced the strength of the walls. The church boasts boasts some of the best examples of fifteenth century stained glass left in Britain. There are eighteen panels illustrating the life of St. Helena. The church tower is 145 feet high and has a peel of thirteen bells. She attended the Ballarat Technical Art School during the early 1930s, and later the George Bell School. In 1938 Gilda Gude and Betty Brown, another Ballarat Technical Art School student, designed the flora carpet for the Ballarat Begonia Festival. This artwork was completed for a competition sponsored by the large art supply company Wiltshires. In 1952 Gude won the Royal Art Society Drawing Prize, and began lecturing at RMIT in 1861. The construction is of Black Ranges faced with Grampians Freestone. The bell tower is 70 feet high, and the walls are 30 inches thick. The church was opened on 30th March 1873 by the Bishop of Melbourne, the Right Reverend Dr. Goold. The Historical Society have a programme for this opening - tickets for front seats were 10/- each. The sanctuary was added during 1927 as was a white marble altar which was the gift of a parishioner. Much earlier - In 1865 - a wooden Catholic Church was built on this street near the Court House site. The Duke of Edinburgh was entertained here in 1868 during a visit to Australia and the goldfields. It was the first "mobile" telephone which had a prime objective of providing isolated or "hard" to connect with locations instant communication links. Like a lot of "new" technologies it evolved from a war environment. This handset was used to connect offices and workshops, which due to their functions could not be co-located with their prime office(external workshops).The evolution from the early 1900s to the mid 1980s when mobile communication technology progressed in leaps and bounds from hard wire telephone communication to mobile digital receivers. This handset was manufactured by a subcontracted Australian company under the Australian Post Office mandate.This handset is significant in that it was donated by the Mount Beauty Timber yards and formed an integrated part of its communication system with its out lying work yards and buildings, before the mobile handset evolution. This handset was located in an environment which required a rugged and reliable day to day communications linkage as a vital part of its logistical (business) survival. As progress demands it, the faster that customers are satisfied with the service they obtain from suppliers the longer those services will be asked for and the longer and more profitable the supplier will be. This edict is as true for rural companies as it is for small or large city businesses. The customer is "always" right.This sturdy field telephone has a shell housing made in black bakelite material with a "U" form housing the major components (wiring, magneto and batteries). The main housing has two metal bells, with a central ringer between both, on the top part (to notify incoming calls). In front of the main structure is a box with the telephone hand piece (ear and mouth receptacles) nestled on two cradles. An on/off switch is activated when handset is removed from its cradle. On the front of the control box is a winder handle(to ring off) and in a field situation to activate/deactivate the magneto. To the left of the winder but on the the main body are two wind up connection buttons for the connection of operational wires (power)On the main right hand front body and next to two chrome switches is a plate with "L (next to the top switch) and below this "L2" and underneath this are "or" "EARTH".
