A plaster replica of the 377 ozs gold nugget that was discovered in March 1861 in Robinson Crusoe valley at a depth of 5 feet by Mr John Knott and his son. It was the largest nugget found on the field. Value in 2016 $595,463. An article by the Bendigo Advertiser on Saturday 16 March 1861 describes the discovery "One of the largest pieces of gold that have been turned out of the ground on Bendigo, was yesterday brought to light in a small gully called Dead Bullock Gully, on the Kangaroo Flat side of Robinson Crusoe. The fortunate discoverers of the treasure are in this instance, as is generally the case, "fossickers," and where the nugget was found is in some old ground that has no doubt been turned over times innumerable within a few feet of the spot where the prize was lying hid. The exact weight of the nugget is 377 oz 6¾ dwts of as pure gold as ever came out of the ground. The finders are Mr John Knott and his son; the latter,a lad, being the party who actually found it, which he did under rather peculiar circumstances. He was down below in the old hole, putting a drive into an old pillar that had been left, when he drove his pick into the mass of gold, and partially discovered it. Under the excitement of the moment he cried out loudly, and his father, who was on top, immediately jumped down the hole, under the impression that his son had met with an accident, but fortunately found that he only required assistance in extracting the welcome stranger. The following is a description of the nugget. Length, twelve inches; width, six; while in some places it is of about two inches in thickness, in others it is only about half an inch. It has that peculiarity of form which from the days of the early finders of nuggets has enabled one to discover a resemblance to something either common or uncommon. We have had nuggets resembling frying pans, legs of mutton, dampers, and other articles in use in the rosy days of the diggings. In the present instance several parties who have seen the nugget assert that both in shape and size it is very much like an Australian Platypus, one of the ends of the nugget being exactly in formation like the snout of the animal. It will be exhibited today in the gold office of Mr Bannerman, and will, no doubt,attract the gaze of a crowd. Mr Knott states that at breakfast, before going to work in the morning, the boy mentioned to his mother that he had dreamt on the previous night that he would find a large nugget. The article is an estate agent, Craig Tweed & Co Pty Ltd, ad about a house called Kilhallen which had been in the Truscott family for four generations. The house and the building materials are described. A photo shows the back of the two story house with a small room added on at the back. On the back of the page titled Bendigo properties is a photo of a two story house with ironlace on the verandas, a tree partly obscuring the house and a single story weatherboard building beside it. An auction sale sign is on the front fence. The second photo shows an ornate fireplace with tall carving above it. Written at the top of the page is: A Truscott. Grindstones like this were not carried but hidden in special places with subtle indicators known only to the same tribe or nation. The small and deep nature of the pits suggests this rock may have been used for ochre with the smaller pits being used for water or fat to mix with the pigments. The very hard and dense nature of the rock means materials would not be contaminated during the grinding process.This rock is likely to be very old and is potentially significant from ceremonial perspective. Stones like this have been known to be passed on through multiple generations and been in use for hundreds and possibly thousands of years.This grindstone has hollows on both sides. One large hollow on one side measures approximately 7 cm across and 2 cm deep. The opposite side is distinguished by 3 pits, one large (5 cm wide by 3 cm deep) and two small indentations 2cm by 1cm. The hollows have been chipped and smoothed. The base rock is in the shape of a flattened and slightly elongated sphere, it appears to have been water worn.The side with three pits also bears recent scratches believed to be cut by a disk plough. The National Registration Card was issued to everyone in Great Britain at the outbreak of WW2. Introduced in 1939 at the outbreak of war. It had to be carried at all times if you were an adult and shown upon demand to the Police etc. Initially, all cards were coloured brown like my Dad's example, but in 1943 a new blue coloured card was introduced for adults. This specimen possesses asymmetric brow tines, one of which is palmate. This flattened tine is commonly referred to as a "shovel," and is a typical feature of reindeer. It is not found in other cervids. The nose of red deer is also bare and leathery (like that of a cow), while the nose of reindeer is covered with hair, as is the case with this specimen. Produced by Melbourne designer Leon Haskin in 1972, the design was also sold in colour combinations of gold-and-brown and white-and-blue. The late 1800s saw a growing concern about the amount and nature of homework assigned to students. Some believed homework, especially the focus on rote memorization, negatively affected children's physical and mental well-being. The specific types of homework varied, ranging from memorization tasks to more analytical exercises, like those found in this historic homework book from the period. A green marbled paper covered hardcover school homework book which belonged to Ms Beryl Jacquier. It has dark green tape on the spine. Arithmetic homework is written at the front section and English work is written turning the book upside down at the back. John E. Fowler is handwritten in copperplate black ink at the end of most of the work. London October 23rd 1837 is written at the top right of a response of a reference letter for Mr Edward Wilmot of Banbury. Pages are loose and there is foxing and tanning.
