Each school scored points and the winner had its name inscribed onto this shield.Associated with Orbost District Schools Association school sports 1922-1929. Many of the schools mentioned on this shield have since been closed.A shield made of wood with one large brass shield in the centre and eight smaller brass plaques around the edge. Along the top is a brass banner with the words OLD BOYS CHALLENGE SHIELD.Inscribed onto the centre brass shield/plate are the words PRESENTED BY THE OLD BOYS OF THE ORBOST DISTRICT STATE SCHOOLS 1922 TO THE ONE SCHOOL TO WIN THREE TIMES BEFORE FINAL POSSESSION WON BY BETE BOLONG 1929. This book was found with other books from Orbost House. Orbost House, believed to have been established by the Macalister family around the turn of the 20th century was a boarding house in Lochiel Street, Orbost. Nowlan's Library was in the billiards saloon in Nicholson street Orbost and was owned by Lionel H. Nowlan. The joining fee was 1/- and the cost of borrowing was 3d per book. A hard back book with an illustration of a man's face and two large birds hovering above. The book has black binding. It was written by H.J. Photocopies of old photos from John McPhee of Conron Grange, Whittlesea. Conron Grange was established by Robert and Mary Ann Armstrong in 1855 as part of the Wills Estate, they were tenant farmers to Wills, Mary Ann named the first house Conron Grange meaning "Pretty place with full barns". Robert was killed falling from a horse in 1863 leaving Mary-Ann with children aged 7, 5, 3, 2, and a baby aged 8 weeks. Mary Ann married James Johnston in 1867. Conron Grange remained in the Johnston family until 1938 when John McPhee's parents bought it, it then remained in the McPhee name until John sold it in 2003. Many Orbost babies were weighed on scales using these weights. Used in early 1930's.The early 20th century saw an emphasis in Australia on the reforming of mothering practices. There was a desire to improve infant mortality rates and produce healthy, well-adjusted citizens.Government organisations, in particular hospitals and baby clinics. encouraged mothers to measure their babies and regulate their feeding patterns. By the 1930s most mothers had been influenced to a greater or less extent by these new approaches to infant care.
