Two photos of widows with a handcrafts stall at Flinders Street Station in 1990. Widows met regularly at Legacy House for craft gatherings lessons. Some of the items the Widows produced were entered into an annual craft contest and exhibition. Many items were also donated to the annual Badge Week stall that widows organised. The stall was often outside Legacy House but in these photos from 1990 the stall was set up at Flinders Street Station. Beech Forest Railway Station was constructed in 1902 and had a number off additions to it over the years. At the far end of the station in 1902/3 was constructed a 'balloon' reversing loop, rather than a turntable or a triangle, which rolling stock used in order to even the wear on the wheels. However, the trains also used it. The Garrett in particular was supposed to be turned every second trip to even out its wheel wear, although this was usually ignored for other reasons. The Wodonga rail line and railway station opened in November 1873 when the section of the line from Wangaratta was completed. The expansion of the railways to the northeast of Victoria occurred after the Victorian Government took over the railways in 1867 and the trains serviced large towns such as Seymour, Wangaratta and Wodonga, as well as smaller towns along the way. The original Wodonga Station, located in the middle of the city, was closed on 9 November 2008 as part of the Wodonga rail bypass project. The station platform was largely removed and the area has been redeveloped as part of the Junction precinct.This sign has local and state historical significance as the railways played a critical part in opening up the interior of Australia for commerce, transportation and settlement. Matches and match boxes were common and essential household items in the 19th century and early to mid 20th century. Today matches are used only irregularly. This match box holder was an advertising tool for Roy Pearson who had a motor service station at 100 Kepler Street, Warrnambool in the 1930s. The business was called the Super Service Station and Pearson was the agent for Triumph and Citroen cars. He sold petrol and used cars and did car repairs. In 1937 the business was run by Chorlton and GrahamThis item is of considerable interest showing the type of advertising used in Warrnambool in 1935. Apart from its utilitarian use of holding a match box, it is an advertising tool containing a 1935 calendar and it also uses humour as its main appeal. The holder features a face which shows a happy man when held one way (“This man calls at Pearson’s Service Station for satisfaction’) and a grumpy man when it is turned around (‘This man wishes he did call’). This is a metal match box holder, painted blue with yellow printing and an image of a man’s face. It has a 1935 calendar. It is much rusted on the inside and a little blotched on the outside. ‘Roy H. Pearson, Super Service Station, Ye Auto Fille Here, Phone 511, 100 Kepler Street, Warrnambool.
