She was born to John Gilbert and Annie Cameron Gilbert, and had seven sisters and one brother. Christening gowns are traditional outfits made just for baby’s baptism. They are almost always white and can be very ornate, highly decorated garments. Usually, the christening gown is quite long – much longer than the baby being christened, particularly when it is worn by a young or very small baby. Many families keep a “family” christening gown that has been passed down through various family members and is used for the baptism ceremony. This christening robe was probably used by the Cameron family.The christening gown was a late 18th century innovation usually made of white lawn, muslin or net, longer than the baby and fancier than a day gown. The design was a more moderate version of contemporary adult fashion. Most 19th century christening gowns featured lace. All, until the end of the century, had low necklines and short sleeves. This gown reflects the style of christening robes in the early 20th century. A high waisted, short-sleeved long white broderie anglaise christening robe made of fine cotton. Was presented to Mrs Lucie Hallenstein, honorary secretary of Alfred Hospital combine auxiliaries c. 1920. Mrs Hallenstein's Granddaughter Jane Helena Walters nee Shannon trainee of Alfred Hospital 1948-1951 presented the box to the nursing achieves with a hand written letter of explanation on 28/04/2011. Paper card insert is signed by Louisa Mann who was matron from 1912-1928.Item is significant as it was presented from Louisa Mann. Item also carries the Maltese cross from the Alfred hospital insignia. Has been presented to the archive from Alfred Hospital trainee. Handcrafted wooden box with parquetry Maltese cross in center. Box is made with multiple timber types and shades, is finished with a gloss finish. Two brass hinges allow the box to open. 'Glenara' is situated along the Deep Creek at Bulla and was built on an original government grant of land by Walter Clark. His fourth child, Alistair, spent much of his life there and with the help of his gardener, W.Peers, gained world recognition for introducing 150 new rose species which included the Black Boy and Lorraine Lee. The Ocean and Wattle Groves Precinct, Warrnambool is registered by Heritage Victoria, and is one of the earliest rural Housing Commission estates in Victoria. It is an intact, representative example of mid-twentieth century public housing in Victoria. Charles Meynell Pitt Withers (aka Bill) was the son and last child of artist Walter Herbert and Fanny (nee Flinn) Withers. He was born February 5, 1902 at Heidelberg and baptised April 4, 1902 at St John's, Heidelberg. The family moved to Southernwood at the corner of Brougham and Bolton streets, Eltham in 1903. The item was donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council. The Country Roads Board was the government authority for the construction and maintenance of main roads in Victoria between 1913 and 1983. It was succeeded by the Road Construction authority on 1 July 1983 and later merged with the Road Traffic Authority on July 1 1989 to form the Roads Corporation. James Cameron, an Orbost farming pioneer and Member of the Legislative Assembly, fathered the Country Roads Board. This ledger is a hand-written record of accounts for the Orbost Shire local council. It pre-dates computer records. Photo depicts a final year woolclassing class from the Gordon Institute in Geelong. They have prepared a display re: woolclassing for the visit of the Prince of Wales to Geelong in 1920. They are on the top floor of the Dennys Lascelles woolstore. The donor's father, Mr Cyril Cameron, can be seen in the photo at sixth from the right. Cyril Cameron (known as 'Cam') came from the family property 'Burnside' near Glenthompson in the Western District. He joined Strachan & Co. as an office boy in Aug. 1914 and then joined the 8th Battalion, 1st AIF in January 1915. He returned to Australia in early 1920 and started work at Strachan's again. He did the wool classing course (one year, evening?) at the Gordon in 1920-21. He became Head Wool Valuer at Strachan's in 1938 and retired in 1970. His office at Strachan's was on the top floor, directly overlooking what is now the entrance to the National Wool Museum (formerly Dennys Lascelles woolstore). He died in 1983. Interestingly, within the photo, can be seen a poster on the wall advertising the RSS or Diggers' Mill. The new Warrnambool Methodist Church was opened on 1st April 1939. The Church complex was designed by Messrs A.S. and R.A. Eggleston and built by J.D.E. and T. Walter. It comprised a church seating 430 people, an assembly hall seating 300, kindergarten and primary classrooms. The three ministers present in the photograph were: Rev B. Wylie (Hamilton), Rev N. Emil Jackschowsky was born in Insterburg (Prussia then Germany now Russia). He met Mary Schwerkolt aboard the 'Seydlitz' on its way to Australia. He was working as a ships steward. They married in Pittsburg in U.S.A in 1912. While visiting family in Germany he was conscripted. His son Walter was born in 1919. Emil became an American citizen in 1928.
