Relaying tram tracks at the eastern end of Aphrasia St., Newtown, looking east. The location is immediately west of the Pleasant St. intersection, soon after Aphrasia St. was extended from Pleasant St. to Pakington St. so that the three sharp curves for trams into Retreat Road, Pleasant St. and then Aphrasia St. were reduced to one, from Pakington into Aphrasia St. May 1914. Note that sleepers are being used in the construction. All the original tracks were laid as a "stringer" construction, as seen in items 9271 and 9214, with tie bars and continuous concrete about 50cm wide under each rail. The Cabbage Tree Creek township was originally established to support the booming timber industry of the mid 20th century. Five timber mills worked full time supporting the families that were drawn to the area's wealth of natural resources. The settlement of Cabbage Tree Creek is located on the Princes Highway, 27 km east of Orbost in East Gippsland. The first white settler arrived in the valley in 1887 cutting a dray track from Marlo to the south-west. Several families cleared the alluvial flats, growing maize, peas and beans and raising pigs, cattle and sheep. Later the farmers milked cows, sending cream to Orbost. In the late 1890s, small quantities of alluvial gold were found in the creek. A school commenced classes in 1913, but enrolment was small and at times the school operated part time with several other small schools in the area. The school building served as a hall for the district. From the 1920s the Cabbage Tree Hotel catered to drivers on the improved Princes Highway. General use of milk bottles is usually associated with the 20th century , with occasional late 19th century. Initially, milk was delivered in cans stacked upright in a wagon. At each stop, someone, usually the wife of the house, would bring a pitcher or a pail to the wagon, and the milk man would ladle out the desired amount of milk. Needless to say, this practice was hazardous and unhealthy. The New York State Tuberculosis Association condemned the practice of selling “loose milk,” still being conducted in New York City in 1922, as a major cause for the spread of tuberculosis (Glass Container1922:8). This is one of two cast brass nameplates of James & Alexander Brown in our collection. The Newcastle, NSW, firm was renowned for its coal mining and exporting business established in colonial Australia in 1843. The firm had an office in Melbourne and sold coal for commercial use and from the Wharf for the domestic market. The coal was then distributed along the southwest coast of Victoria in steamships or steam packets and into the regional areas of Victoria by cart and wagon. In 1890 there was a strike of coal workers but the Geelong Advertiser, September 1, 1890, announced that “a firm of coal merchants only recently received some large cargoes from Newcastle”. This supply of coal could have originated at the colliery of James & Alexander Brown. About James & Alexander Brown: - James (1816-1894), John (1823-1846) and Alexander Brown (1827-1877) migrated with their parents from Scotland to Sydney, Australia, in 1842. The next year James leased land and was assisted by his brothers Alexander and John in mining coal in the area near Maitland. The market was very competitive, with the government controlling prices. James was instrumental in a legal battle that resulted in the introduction of open competition for coal mining. James and Alexander had become business partners by 1852 and moved south of Newcastle where they established and worked a profitable mining enterprise. Their assets by 1857 included a ships’ chandlery, a fleet of steamships and an overseas trading business. They were the first firm to import rum, sugar and coffee into Newcastle. By 1892 they were exporting coal to New Zealand, China, North America, and various colonial ports. They had elaborate workshops to service their own steam engines and steamships. John Oxley was a shoe and butchers’ knife manufacturer, who was listed in Whitecroft UK in 1822 . By 1825, he was based in Hollis Croft. John apparently died in about 1837. He had two sons – George (1808-1879) and James (1811-1881) who took over the business. George moved to Indianna, USA and in 1868 James continued to manufacture 'Cooks’ and palette knives and steels" Oxley’s trade mark was a butcher’s knife crossed with a sharpening steel (and the letters ‘JO’). The AW Allen's Limited Confectionary Factory constructed in 1923-24 on Riverside Avenue dominates the landscape on the south side of the river directly behind the dome of the Flinders Street railways station. This bridge was built in 1902, replacing a previous structure that crossed the Moyne River from 1857 and linked Belfast with Belfast East, as the two areas of Port Fairy were then known. Prior to that, passage over the river was via a ford (an underwater stone track that allowed wagons to cross when the river was low) located just north of where the current car bridge stands. The present bridge survived the great flood of 1946, but has been the subject of innumerable patch-up jobs over its 114 years. In 2012, the bridge underwent a detailed structural assessment and was given the OK for the next eight to 10 years, notwithstanding the need for regular maintenance works. At the time, it was estimated a new bridge would cost between $2-3 million. In 1910, horses and cattle at the Royal Melbourne Show were paraded together for the first time in a ‘Massed’ (Grand) Parade. This innovation proved very popular with exhibitors and the general public alike. The Grand Parade continued to be a Show highlight and in 1952, with the inclusion of all horses for the first time, it became even more of a spectacle. Together with the animals, harness vehicles and Clydesdale wagons were included in the Grand Parade. The following year, as a tribute to the new Queen Elizabeth II, the annual show was named the Coronation Show and for the first time floats from various country agricultural societies were included in the Grand Parade. In 1986, the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV) held an information stall at Chadstone Shopping Centre. The stall was situated in a prominent position opposite a Coles New World supermarket. In this photo, two shoppers are perusing information leaflets from the stall table, which is staffed by several AFV member volunteers providing assistance. There is also a large freestanding display board, as well as an audiovisual display on a colour screen television. Another AFV member volunteer is standing beside the television, ready to hand out leaflets to passers by.COL photo of several people standing around an information stall at a shopping centre. The tintype (or ferrotype or Melainotype) was produced on metallic sheet (not, actually, tin) instead of glass. The plate was coated with collodion and sensitized just before use. It was introduced by Adolphe Alexandre Martin in 1853. The most common size was about the same as the carte-de-visite, 5.5cm x 9.0cm, but both larger and smaller ferrotypes were made. The smallest were "Little Gem" tintypes, about the size of a postage-stamp, made simultaneously on a single plate in a camera with 12 or 16 lenses. They were often produced by travelling photographers, and were cheaper than Ambrotypes so made photography available to working classes, not just to the more well-to-do. The print would come out laterally reversed (as one sees oneself in a mirror). Being quite rugged, tintypes could be sent by post. Tintypes were eventually superseded by gelatin emulsion dry plates in the 1880s, though street photographers in various parts of the world continued with this process until the 1950s. London, and in c.1866 producing cartes wholesale for Mayall of Regent Street. They appear to have printed numerous cards with a very small name printed onto the lower front. In the photograph there are a number of men standing around the buildings as well as what appears to be two children sitting on a bench outside a building.
