The Railway Hotel in Sunbury was owned and operated by the Edwards family until Dawn Edwards died in 2004. It is situated on the corner of Station and Evans Streets and over the years has undergone many changes to accommodate the changes in liquor and gaming laws.A black and white photograph of the Railway Hotel, renamed The Olive Tree. Woodlands Homestead was erected by William Greene in 1843 and is one of the state's oldest buildings. Over the years the complex has been renovated and extended. The property has connections with the racing industry over the years along with the neighbouring properties of 'Cumberland' and 'Attwood'. Sunbury Secondary College was established in 1959 and was built on the site of the former rabbit canning factory on the corner of Riddell and Racecourse Roads. 'Glenara' is situated along the Deep Creek at Bulla and was built on an original government grant of land by Walter Clark. His fourth child, Alistair, spent much of his life there and with the help of his gardener, W.Peers, gained world recognition for introducing 150 new rose species which included the Black Boy and Lorraine Lee. In the 1970s extensive renovation work and repairs were done to the 'Lodge' at Rupertswood. The Rupertswood Hotel was built on the NE corner at the intersection of Brook and Evans Streets. It was demolished in the late 1970s, in the dead of night, to make way for a modern retail area. This iron was given to Isobel and Stan Campbell by another woman in Boort Victoria pre 1999 as per the letter attached with the Donation form. These irons were manufactured in Australia as per the printing on the cardboard box and instruction sheet. These self-generating gas irons used methylated spirits in the small tank at the back of the iron. The irons would have been used prior to electricity being available to be connected to a house and used for ironing clothes and other woven material items used by the members of the household.Brown cardboard box with separate lid with black printing on the front and back of box and lid. This came as part of a large collection of photos from Eric Boardman. Originally catalogued by R Waters on 12.02.1988. There are 3 copies of the original in black & white 20.5 cm x 25.5 cm format. According to information in the supplementary file from Bob Cahill who is the grandson of JF Cahill and son of Malachi Cahill, the identification of the photo is as follows: L to R (standing): James, John Francis (father), John, Malachi; L to R (seated): Mary / Margaret nee Ryan (mother), Polly (Mary), Michael (Mick) and ? (not specified) Margaret. NB/ Nora (Annie) who ran the Ball Court Hotel is missing from the photo. Other details: John Francis Cahill was a blacksmith & bootmaker and thought to be English; he married Mary or Margaret Ryan prior to coming to Sunbury. He built the Ball Court Hotel in 1854. (See 'Bulla Bulla'.) Nora (Annie) married a McGrath; Margaret married a Breen; James did not marry; Mary (Polly) married Justin Ford, Shire President in 1917. Malachi (born in 1878) married Mary Jane English. She was aged forty at the time of marriage & was originally from Ballarat. She worked at 'The Hill'. Malachi was a railway worker & died travelling on a train.
