These eight photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio at Bendigo in November 1978. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. Refer to Item 6267. Photo of a very crowded cable tram set inbound in Bridge Road, c1925, lettered M&MTB" with the destination of Spencer St with many men crowding onto the tram. Alongside the tram is the front of a motor vehicle. Cable tram 81? In the background is a number of shops - L. Johnson Saddler, S. Christie and J Hogan (?) Trotting Sulky Manufacturers and A. Vickery & Son Manufacturing Engineers. Note from Rod Atkins 29/7/2019: The tram is full because the crowd as discharged from the racecourse so most likely taken on a Saturday. The portrait photo is of John (Yiannis) Raftopoulos, father of Michael, Theodora and Dennis. John arrived in Australia in 1912 at the age of 13 together with his father Mihalis Raftopoulos. Mihalis had first come to Australia in 1895 and again in 1906; he finally returned to Ithaca in 1918. John however remained and eventually established his own business, Central Fruit Agency, in Melbourne's Victoria Market. He was also in partnership with his brothers-in-law John and Peter Karantgis in the London Cafe in Elizabeth Street Melbourne.John Raftopoulos was typical of many early young Ithacan males who settled in Melbourne and who with a strong entrepreneurial spirit gradually established themselves in various businesses.A black and white studio portrait photograph of a smartly dressed young man. On 16 September 1996 the Ithacan Philanthropic Society celebrated its 80th anniversary with a debutante ball held at the Carlton Crest Hotel Grand Waldorf Ballroom. The Consul of Greece, Mr. George Veis was guest of honour. President of the IPS was Peter Paxinos. The photograph of the event was published in the local Greek newspaper 'Neos Kosmos'.The 1996 debutante ball was an important event for the Ithacan Philanthropic Society to celebrate its 80th anniversary since it was established in Melbourne in 1916.A black and white newspaper photograph of a debutante set and partners photographed at the Carlton Crest Hotel. The girls' partners are standing at the back and the debutantes are seated in the front. The photograph has been backed onto white cardboard with another photograph and laminated.
