Certificate, Boy Scouts Certificate, 1928
'Harry' (Richard Henry) Watson was the son of John (Jack) and Edie Watson of Cromie Street Murtoa. This is his Registration Certificate for the Boy Scouts 1st Murtoa Troop. An illustrated rectangular certificate in blue, navy blue and orange colours on a greyish background with a white border. Illustrations of scouting activities are included along with the Motto - Be Prepared - and a picture of Baden Powell. The hand written names of the scout (Harry Watson); the troop (1st Murtoa); and two representatives of the State Executive Committee and the date (1/9/1928) are included with the Scout's Promise. Certificate Register No.380/4 The slash could be a 1 or a 7 but does not rest on the line as do the other numbers. Accessory - Grooming set, F.H. FAULDING & CO. LTD, 1930s to 1940s
This gift-boxed grooming set contains men's toiletry and grooming items in a lined and fitted case. The set was made by Fauldings from 193o to 1940 and sold by chemists and department stores throughout Australia. An advertisement promotes a variety of sets as 'Toilet Treasures by Faulding' and pictures several sets called 'caskets', and gives the different combinations a set number. Another advertisement promotes the sets as 'Gifts of Rare Discernment'. The items on offer include After-shave Lotion, a bottle of Brilliantine for hair, and an Old English Lavender shaving stick in a glass container. Some sets have Complexion Soap, a good quality sterilised Shaving Brush and Talcum Powder. A grooming set similar to the one in our collection was priced at 11 shillings in 1936 and would cost approximately AU $90 in 2022. This boxed grooming set is an example of men's toiletries sold from the 1920s to the 1940s in Australia. The supplier, Faulding, brand products have been available since 1845 when Francis Hardy Faulding opened a pharmacy in Adelaide, South Australia. The company has built a reputation for being a trustworthy supplier of pharmacy and healthcare needs for 175 years.Male grooming set; black leather-covered case with green velvet lining and strap with a metal button closure. The lid and front of the base fold out. The case is fitted with straps and a compartment to secure items inside. The set contains men's toiletries and grooming items; a nail file with ebonised handle, an oval bristle brush with shaped ebonised hand grip, and a twelve-sided textured glass bottle with a gold metal lid and a shave stick with silver foil around the base, wrapped in waxed paper. There is also a ten-sided plain glass bottle with silver metal lid, an oval metal soap container with hinged lid and an unused round cake of soap. A light brown leather stropping strap with a metal 'D' ring one end and a punched hole in the other end is fitted onto the folded down side of the case. The shaving stick is Old English Lavender by Faulding and the soap is Christy's. Inscriptions on the shaving stick wrapper, bottle base, label and lid. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was formed in 1863. The first fire engine house was in Liebig Street and carters were required to carry water to fire scenes. In 1889 the Council built a new Fire Station on Liebig Street and Warrnambool hosted its own Annual Demonstration in 1894. In 1891 the volunteer brigade became part of the Country Fire Brigade. The Fire Station relocated to Raglan Parade in 1915 and then to Timor Street in 1961. In 1989 the Brigade moved back to Raglan Parade. This booklet is a memento of the State Urban Championships that were held in Warrnambool in 2009 (Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria and Country Fire Authority)This is a booklet of 96 pages containing printed material, maps, advertisements, photographs and tables. From the early 1950s, the Kew Repertory Players performed more substantial, if less spectacular fare in the Recreation Hall, and later in the new Kew City Hall, after the former’s demolition in 1960. Their repertoire ranged from plays by Noel Coward to J.B. Priestley. Many of their programmes, the earliest from 1953, and the last from 1965, form part of our collection.Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1970s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. Programme issued by The Kew Repertory Players for a performance of No Escape, a play written by Rhys Davies in collaboration with Archibald Batty. Christ Church Warrnambool was one of the first hosts of the scouting movement in Warrnambool and in 1909 a bivouac was held in the church grounds under Scoutmaster Jones. It became a boys club in 1920 but the scouts were reformed in 1926, the date of this certificate. F Petterd is the name on the certificate.A record from one of the earliest times of the scout movement in Warrnambool. Rectangular light card certificate coloured in orange and blue.
