Functional object - Key, Bundy Clock Key - 18A and K116, c1940?
Used from South Melbourne depot in the time recording Bundy clocks that were located around the MMTB system. The key number related to the driver's shift number. The reference has details of the manufacturing of these clocks and the companies involved. .2 - as above, but for Kew Depot, No. 116. Series of 14 letters, memos, correspondence, documents regarding the interface between trains and cable trams at Level crossings on the inner circle line - Queens Parade Clifton Hill. Includes a cutting about an accident from the Age 27/6/1922 where people were injured due to the safety bar. Includes discussion about the possibility of cable trams entangled in a broken strand, actions of signalmen, Victorian Railways instructions, correspondence between the MMTB, Tramway Board and the Railways including letterhead, notice to grip men and conductors describing the operation of the bolt or bar that would prevent a grip passing the point when the gates were closed. Document - Patent Applications - Trolley Pole safety appliance, Percy Ireland, 1920
Percy Markham Ireland (1893-1976), a tramway rolling stock engineer with the MMTB and a Military engineer applied in 1920 for a patent for a "Trolley Pole safety appliance for electric trams and the like". He was successful in gaining a patent in a number of countries including the UK, France, Germany, Canada, the USA, and New Zealand. The associated documents show the differences in making patent applications in various countries. From research undertaken by the Museum it appears that while his patent applications were successful, his invention was never actually implemented on tramcars in Melbourne". Collected by Noelle Jones as research for an article in the March 2023 issue of the Museum's magazine Bellcord, giving details of Mr Ireland's tramway and military career. Quotes Mr. John Cain (Senior) about the working conditions on the Clifton Hill and Northcote cable trams that are about to be replaced by double deck buses. Compares working conditions with that of the MMTB. Notes that some employees worked 27 years without a holiday. Black and white print of MMTB Bus No. 79. This was the second tourist bus, imported by MMTB Chairman Bell from Canada in 1939. It was built by the Canadian Car Co. Because of WW2, it was put into normal passenger service in July 1940 and had a mundane existence from that time onwards. It was sold to Melbourne Brighton Bus Lines however they never used it. Bus has the destination of Nicholson St. Appears is poor condition. Has other Mark III buses in the background. All have PTC Copyright Stamp on rear. Badge - Trackman - 240 - All Lines, Tramway Board, c1916
Use to identify a tramway employee - a trackman - Track maintainer. Would have allowed free travel when on duty and to and from work. Used possibly from mid 1910's when the Board was formed until it was replaced by the MMTB in 1921 or when a different identification system was implemented. Made by Stokes and Sons Melbourne.Demonstrates the method of identifying cable tram employees. Round pressed brass badge with the words "Trackman" and number "240" pressed into the centre of the badge around the top half of the badge "All Lines" with small horizontal lines within the individual letters. Has the Tramways Board logo on the lower part of the badge. On the rear of the badge, two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a single-piece leather strap with a buttonhole cut into it to enable it to be worn on a uniform.
