1st Battalion Australia is an Infantry Battalion of the Australian Army. The 1st Battalion can be traced back to 1854 as a unit of Volunteer Rifles raised in New South Wales. The Battalion was active during periods 1914-1919, 1921-1930 and 1957-1971. St Katherine's Church St Helena dates from 1858. The Church was built by Major Anthony Beale in memory of his wife Katherine Rose Beale. This photograph shows one of the stained glass windows; dedicated to those who restored this church. The Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club sponsored a Collection Guide Dog. Money was collected regularly by Guide Dog volunteers. The funds are used for Guide dog training programs. They are trained to guide a person who has low vision, disability or illness. It began in the 1950s and by 1957 there was a guide dog organisation in each Australian state .UKV Lions club was active in the Kiewa Valley raising money for charities eg. Blind Institute. Two newspaper articles, re the fight to save tree near Ringwood Timber on Maroondah Highway, late 1950s. The Yellow Box tree was located west of Ringwood timber, outside Bill Patterson's Motors near the New Street intersection. The fight was led by Cr Ben Hubbard, the secretary of the Ringwood Horticultural Society, Mr Kearsley, but was eventually lost. The articles are from The Herald and dated December 1957 and 11th June 1959.
