In 1881 Cyrus Bath Retallack purchased land now known as 1200 Mair Street Ballarat. Retallack was a successful Cornish miner and engineer. He built a two storey brick mansion between 1882 and 1883, naming the property ‘Carn Brae’ after the castle in Cornwall. Substantial grounds were established with with range of exotic trees planted, a tennis court was laid out and a stables building was erected. In 1918 the site become a campus of Queen’s GIrls’ Grammar School, then Aquinas College which was merged into the Australian Catholic University from 1973. The Ballarat School of Mines was Australia's first, and was established in 1870. The former Ballarat Circuit Court was the first site of the Ballarat School of Mines. This building was demolished to make way for the Ballarat Technical Art School which was opened in 1915. Image of the Ballarat School of Mines, Lydiard Street in 1882. These books are all old and belonged to local families in the Kiewa Valley. Reading was a major form of entertainment from the 1930s before TV was available.These books give an insight into the interests of families in the Kiewa Valley prior to the invention of TV.Case - Stiff cardboard, yellow & green with two yellow strips on outside. Photograph, Marie Herry (b. 1884) and Louis, eldest daughter and youngest son of Louis and Kate Herry - circa 1900. Marie's father, Louis Herry, was born in Purdu, France in 1855. He married Kate Handforth at Walhalla, Vic. in 1879 and came to Ringwood in 1887 where he erected a weatherboard house and bakery opposite the Club Hotel, using a Miner's Right to secure the land. The first known residents were Mr and Mrs Walter Pretty and their family who moved there in 1856. Mr William Collins took out a miner's right in 1886 and Mr and Mrs Frank Lowe bought the freehold when the site was auctioned in 1930.History of families associated with the property originally leased on a miner's right near the corner of Yarra Street and Cemetery Road circa 1850s, and later had a frontage to the Main Road with access from to Taroona Avenue. -
