Port of Echuca
Coloured Postcard, W.T.P Post card, Original photograph probably taken late 1890's Postcard c. 1908 (postcard appears to be dated 08)
P. S. Adelaide was a logging steamer operating between Echuca and Barmah forest. It was built in 1866 by G. Linklater, Echuca. Original owner J. G. Grassie, Poon Boon Station & S. H. Officer, Murray Downs Station. In June 1891 she was purchased by Murray River Sawmills and spent most of her working life on the Barmah Forest run. In 1960 she was purchased by Echuca Apex Club and steamed to Echuca. Installed on a bed of cement in Hopwood Gardens, Echuca before being restored to be refloated as a significant addition to the Port of Echuca maritime fleet (Parsons, R. Ships of the Inland Rivers. 2005. p.46)The P.S Adelaide is extremely significant as it it the oldest known wooden hulled paddle steamer in the world. She was built in Echuca in 1866 and still operates on the Murray River today. She has worked in the Wool Industry, the Timber Industry and the Tourist Industry.Colour (hand painted?) postcard and colour negative f P. S. Adelaide towing an outrigger barge. Photographs taken of the first computer of Ballarat School of Mines / Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education Mount Helen Campus. This mainframe computer was purchased in 1969 for $116,000 and set up in the First Stage Engineering building (later F Building). It was the first operational teaching facility on the new campus. The initial computer centre staff were Arch McKinnon ad Manager and Judy Wilson as Key Punch Operator.. In 1972 Brian Dixon operated this computer for a night or two a week. This was reasonably common thing to have a photo inset done by Soldiers. Photo inset re; Albert Edward Corrie, pre war he was a Postal employee. Enlisted 25.7.1940 Regt No VX47191 age 30 years, 27.7.1940 he was posted to 7th Div Postal Unit, embark for Eygpt 15.9.1940, hospital at sea 10.10.1940 with Otitis Media, on deck again 13.10.1940, During his time in the Middle East he had various Postal transfers including HQ AIF Postal, he rose through the ranks to W.O 2 by 18.2.1942, disembark Australia 7.8.1942, then two more overseas postings, NG 2.11.1942 - 9.2.1943, posted to 6th Div Postal Unit25.9.1943, NG 29.12.1944 - 7.8.1945, discharged from the 2nd AIF 5.9.1945. This card was one of four items given to every family of a deceased soldier of the British Commonwealth. Families received a memorial plaque, a message from the King, a memorial scroll and a "Where Australians Lie" card and grave photograph or a booklet if the deceased has no known grave. This "Where Australians Lie" card was sent to the brother of Pte W. Williams No. 1442, 2nd Battalion AIF, who was killed on Gallipoli on 29th August 1915, aged 24. Walter enlisted age 23 No 1442 on 27.11.1914 in 2nd reinforcements 2nd Bn AIF, embarked for Egypt 11.2.1915, transferred to Stretcher Bearers 8.4.1915, hospital 9.6.1915 with twisted instep, rejoin unit Gallipoli 13.7.1915, KIA 29.8.1915. Refer also for photo, medals, other Cat No’s 1859P & 1860Folded four page light purple coloured card. Front features an embossed Rising Sun Badge, a title (Australian Imperial Force) and a two line border, all in purple. Inside on the left hand side is a pro forma in purple lettering with spaces for handwritten details. The right hand side features a black and white photograph of a grave marked with a cross with metal name plaques attached. Four crosses feature in the background. The photograph is bordered by a purple line. Stanley Arthur BARRIE No 3176 enlisted in the AIF in Section A 6th Field Ambulance on 7.1.1915 age 23 years 8 months. Embarked for Egypt 4.6.1915, embark for Gallipoli 30.8.1915, hospital 8.10.1915 (unclear) rejoin unit 20.10.1915, embark for France 19.3.1916, hospital 12.11.1916 with Blistered Feet, rejoin unit 5.12.1916, detached to 2nd Div Engineers 6.7.1917, rejoin unit 29.12.1917. After getting himself into trouble AWOL twice then threatening an Officer he transfers to the 23rd Batt on 20.8.1918, KIA 1.9.1918.Xmas /New year card from Pte S BARRIE.
