Functional object - Brass coin holder - 3d and 6d
Used by tramway revenue clerks, most likely the MMTB to count coins, as only so many 3d or 6d would fit into each container. Each has a hole in the base to enable it to be checked that it was empty prior to use or after being used. One of the 3d containers have a loose "washer" which shows the nature of the construction. Has been secured with a piece of string.Demonstrates the methodologies used to count coins and stack them in a revenue office. Provides a sample of each coin that would have been used.Brass coin holder - for use in counting 3d and 6d coins. Made from brass tube with a brass washer rolled or fixed to one end. Badge - Transport Health - Member 50 years, Transport Health Fund
Produced to celebrate a person being a member of the Transport Health Fund for 50 years. The fund started as the Tramways Benefit Society (a Friendly Society) in 1888 and was renamed during 1980s first as the Transport Friendly Society and then Transport Health. It was absorbed by HCF on 1/11/2021. "Westinghouse Australia self-lapping driver's brake valve Type W" circular No. C6 dated 1936, describing the type of brake valve, its features, operations, adjustment, associated double check valve and drawings shown with parts. This type of valve was used by the MMTB, replacing the Manual Lap type on almost the entire fleet. Functional object - sample, Johnson Farebox Co, "Johnson Fare Box Co. Chicago", 1920s
The Johnson Fare Box Co. was a manufacturer of Fare Boxes that enabled the viewing as the coin was deposited and receipt of a fare from a passenger - see reference. The MMTB Footscray X1 class trams used fare boxes in 1926 and this may have been a sample coin to show how it worked. See item 7470 for an associated pamphlet that notes the use of Fare Boxes. Photograph shows Ballarat bogie tram No. 15 at the City terminus (Sturt and Lydiard Sts), c1948. Has a destination of Mt Pleasant with a crewman leaning on the front of the tram. In the background is the Town Hall. The tram was originally Hawthorn Tramways Trust No. 26, then MMTB 132 and sold to the SEC in 1945 becoming tram 15. It was later renumbered to No. 36 during 1953. Badge - Gripman - 13 - Clifton Hill, Tramway Board, c1916
Use to identify a tramway employee - Clifton Hill car house or depot. Would have allowed free travel when in uniform to and from work. Used possibly from mid 1910's when the Tramway Board was formed until it was replaced by the MMTB in 1921 or when a different identification system was implemented. Most likely made by Stokes and Sons - possible imprint covered by the leather part.Demonstrates the method of identifying cable tram employees. Round pressed brass badge with the words "Gripman" pressed into the centre of the badge around the top portion of the badge, the letters "C13H. Has a nickel-plated finish with the Tramways Board logo on the lower part of the badge. On the rear of the badge, two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a two-piece leather strap with a buttonhole cut into it to enable it to be worn on a uniform. Black and white photograph of 2 trams at Preston Workshops c1948 First tram 500 is a W2 class tram built by MMTB at Preston Workshops in 1928. It entered service 27/4/1928 and was withdrawn from service and sold in 1981. The tram's destination is shown as "Special". The tram has been fitted "T" lettered taillights. The second tram, 198, is a Q1 class single truck straight-sill combination tram built by the MMTB at Holden St Workshops. It entered service in 1923 and was reclassified as a Q class tram. It was converted to all night service in 1937 and operated until 1957.
