Military encampments took place in Canon Gully during the 1860s and the 1870s on property which was owned by the Clarke family. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. It was disbanded following the end of the war. 20th Light Horse was the only light horse regiment to serve overseas in WWII.This is one of a collection of photographs featuring a Light Horse regiment drawn from rural and regional Victoria in the period immediately prior to mobilisation for World War 2 (1939-1945).Sepia photograph of soldfer in uniform posed against a background of a house. The uniform belonged to Wing Commander "Leonard Bacon", born 11 June 1906. He enlisted in the RAAF on 31 May 1926 No. 03305 with the rank AC.1. In 9 postings in Vic, QLD and WA he rose through 11 ranks to Sgt Maj Class 2 by 1940. He was commissioned as Flying Officer on 1.8.1940. He rose through the ranks to be Wing Commander on 1.7.1951. During WW2 from 1941 he was explosives Inspecting Officer at Northern Area 5 then to Explosive Inspecting Officer for the whole RAAF in the S/W Pacific. This role took him to some 21 places in the North from Townsville - Darwin to across the islands many several times. Leonard was awarded a "Mention in Despatches" on Morotai in 1945. Post WW2 in 1950 Leonard was appointed Chief Inspector of explosives in the RAAF, one of these roles was the supervision of the disposal of large quantities of War Stock. On 13.6.1958 he was recommended for an “OBE” which he received in the 1959 New Years Honors List. Leonard retired from the RAAF on 11.6.1960 after 34 years. This is a very brief record of his service documents.Dark Blue Service Dress Uniform comprising of jacket (.1) Pants (.2) gold buttons with RAAF emblems. Ribbons on the coat are as follows; Left to Right: OBE, 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, British War Medal with clasp "MID". Australian Service medal, Long Service and Good Conduct medal. These buttons are from a nursing uniform (England and Wales). They were made for the General Nursing Council for England and Wales by the firm of Boyd Cooper. This business was established in England in 1780 and is still making uniforms and other items for hospitals etc. The buttons belonged to Edith Henry, a member of a well-known Warrnambool family in 19th and 20h century WarrnamboolThese buttons are of interest as they are a good example of buttons used on nursing uniforms in England early in the 20th century and they belonged to Edith Henry, a member of a prominent Warrnambool family.1 Circular bakelite button with raised Tudor rose, text and scroll around the edge. Demonstrates the detail of the uniform of tramway/motorman workers.1940 - Cap Badge for a "Motorman". Made from a cast brass item, nickel plated to indicate the position held by the wearer on their cap as part of their uniform. Cast in the form of the handwritten or script word/s and underlined. On the rear, silver soldered on are two brass loops at either of the badge to enable it to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap. On the back of the back of the badge in very small letters is the name of the manufacturer - Stokes & Sons / Melbourne. Same manufacturers logo as in Reg Item 1937. Part of the ESCo company and possibly early SEC uniform. ESCo employee number on a special lapel bade - see Reg. item 1952. Not used by the SEC from 1940 - employee number on the cap but early SEC uniforms show them on the collar of the jacked - not known if this uniform adopted. See Reg. Item 1368 for photos of early SEC uniform showing badge on the neck.
