The A.N.A. Hall in View Street was opened in August 1894. The Sandhurst Branch was started on August 26th, 1874. In July 1874, several gentlemen met together, and when a sufficient number had given in their names and sufficient promises of support had been received, the board of directors were approached with a view to forming a branch of the association in Bendigo. On August 26, 1874, the inception took place. The building was demolished in 1971. Plaque formerly attached to the lower edge of the framed photo collage of the Building Committee of the Sandhurst Branch of the Australian Natives' Association. It lists names of men in the photos. Names printed on gold coloured paper mounted on piece of masonite, matching the position on the collage. This badge has 'Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind' written in gold against a dark blue background around an oval shape, with the words 'Rifle Club' in the same lettering at the base. Inside the oval, on a light blue background, is a lighthouse and a rifle either side of it, the butts crossing at the apex. In the 1960's, the RVIB approached engineer George Glover to produce equipment to allow blind people to shoot, based upon that made available at St Dunstan's Hospital in the UK. The rifle range opened in February 1966 at the rear of St Kilda Road with 30 members, and soon became involved in matches with sighted rifle clubs in the area. The club had many successful years, competing against teams from Canada and New Zealand in 1968, and had the support of ICIANZ which provided them with free munitions as well as teams to compete against. This image is one from a series of portraits taken by Rob Elliott to record the character of the Border District through the faces if its identities. Garry Smith was a champion axeman from Northeast Victoria who represented Australia on more than 40 occasions including winning 28 world titles and more than 200 state and district wood chopping events. Memorial wood chopping events are still held in his honour including an annual event at the Mitta Muster in Northeast Victoria.Garry Smith was a hardwood logging contractor for Dunstans at Wodonga for 25 years. After retiring from competition, Mr. Smith managed the Australian senior and junior teams for 10 years. He was a prime mover in the establishment of the Victorian Axemen's Council and the Australian Axemen's Association. He served 21 years as president of the North-East Axemen's Association. At one stage, Garry was president of the Australian, Victoria and North-East Axemen's Associations at the same time. Set of two Newspaper clippings pasted onto a single sheet of paper with two Punch holes on the left hand side. Clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, 19/8/1971; two letters to the Editor, about the closure of the Ballarat tramways, that some of the trams and line should be saved and what the aims of the BTPS are. The first from a person titled "All Het Up", and the second from John Anderson of P.O. Box 145 Box Hill. The second clipping from The Sun, Melbourne dated 14/7/1971 written by Keith Dunstan in his column, "A Place in the Sun" about the forthcoming closure of the Ballarat and Bendigo systems. Has a photo of a Bendigo Birney tram and notes their rarity. The second part is about the formation of the BTPS, which has 100 paid up members and quotes Shane McCarthy, a committeeman. This is a set of 13 photographs of officers posted to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa, Bendigo Victoria in circa 1986. The photos were taken in the gardens next to the front steps of Fortuna Villa. LTCOL Don Swiney MBE was appointed as CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1985 to 1987. He was subsequently promoted to Colonel and was Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corp from November 1988 to January 1991, and the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1993 to January 1996.This is a set of 13 photographs of officers posted to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa, Bendigo Victoria in circa 1986. At the top of the shield is a Lions International symbol consisting of two lions heads facing outwards either side of the words 'Lions International' and the letter 'L' in between them. At the base of the shield is a blue and gold coloured badge, consisting of two rifles crossed in front of the RVIB lighthouse, with the words 'Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind Rifle Club' around the outside. Between the two symbols is engraved "In memory of the late George Glover Past President-Lions Club of Bennettswood - Patron and Life Member of the R.V.I.B. Rifle Club. George developed and donated equipment in order that the blind may enjoy rifle shooting and compete with others. His work done will continue to serve." Cabinet Portrait of a boy and a girl. The girl, Ivy May Muriel Dower (Born 1891 Bendigo, Died 1980.), is seated on a wicker couch and holding a doll. The boy Jack is John Adrian Dower, (Born 1893 Rochester, Died 1952 Paynesville) is standing to the front of the couch and holding a bat? On the back is written: To Grandma (Elizabeth Dower (Born 1833) from Ivy & Jack. Parents of Jack and Ivy are (James Martin Dower Born 1859, Fryers Creek, Victoria and Died 11th October 1942 at Brighton. Mother was Florence Amy Chalmer, Born 1867, Sandhurst, Vic, Died 13th August , Brighton Vic.1953). Dowar, Dunstan and Opie names are related and are associated with Bendigo district. The photo is part of an album with other members not identified as yet. Coincidentally Neville Davies from the BHS has this photo in his family history photographs. Photocopy of a transcript prepared by Lloyd Jenkins and draft copy with corrections in blue and black ink of an interview with Mrs. Edna Mader and Mrs Valda Busch at 220 Drummond St. South Ballarat on 28 January 1987. Mrs. Busch was 79 at the time, and Mrs Mader 74. Both worked at the ESCo and SEC offices in the customer accounts section, preparing accounts and associated paperwork. Reviews the system of accounts, meter readers, working conditions. Mrs Mader left the SEC in 1945, (first child) then returned later on as a machine operator until retirement at age 62 in 1974. Mentions some tramway staff. Notes Mr. W. J. K Dunstan who was the office manager in Ballarat, Mr. Charles Trethowan who commenced as the office boy in Ballarat and rose to be the Chairman of the SEC. Also notes social activities, WWII and the take over of ESCo by the SEC. Interview comprises 11sheets of A4 paper. George Smith came to Wodonga c.1885 and carried on a business as a blacksmith and wheelwright in Hume Street. He subsequently erected the very substantial Federal Coach Factory in High Street. In 1901 the Coach Factory was sold to Mr C. E. Jones, but within three or four years George Smith again found himself in the establishment he had built. In 1907/8 Marcus Buntz partnered by a G. F. Simpson took possession of the Federal Coach Factory. In 1912 Buntz bought out the interest of Simpson and engaged a first-class wheelwright to do the woodwork. In 1912 a buggy could be had from £40 and a sulky £18. The business over many years developed from a shoeing forge and wheelwright business to a more modern day garage, keeping abreast with mechanisation. Marcus Buntz was joined in the business by his three sons, George, an A grade mechanic, Edward an auto-electrician and Henry, a blacksmith’s striker. The sons eventually took over the garage and handled both coach building and general service work. The firm also maintained the Wodonga Water Pump for many years, ensuring the town’s water supply. In 1948 the old established motor garage was purchased by Mr Jack Mylon. In July 1960 the building became Wodonga Market, housing a butcher, snack bar, milk bar, fruit and veg, Bill Dunstan’s Boat Centre and an Auction Mart. Colour photograph of TMSV tour photo for the 60th anniversary of electric trams in Ballarat in August 1965. Photo of Ballarat No. 18 photographed alongside MMTB AEC Regal Mk III bus, No. 543 (42 seats) (Reg. No. HJG 543). No. 18 has a specially painted board over the front of the tram "60th Anniversary / Electric Trams / 1905 Ballarat 1965". Standing between the tram and Bus are Les Denmead, D. Irvine, J. Dowd and T. Young. Both vehicles showing "Special" and standing on Ballarat depot fan. Photo also appears in "MMTB News", Oct - Nov. 1965, Reg. Item 2719.7. This is a set of 16 photographs of Army Survey Regiment personnel undertaking a non-tactical navigation exercise, part of the field phase of regimental training in the Wellsford Forest, Bendigo 1985. This was one of the six regimental training objectives outlined in the administrative instruction – Exercise “City Soldier” accompanying these photos. The other objectives were SLR rifle and M30 grenade handling revision, and first aid at Fortuna; RATEL at Wellsford Forest and rifle shooting at Wellsford Rifle Range. Personnel from Air Survey, Cartographic, Lithographic and Headquarters Squadrons were reallocated to four training platoons for one week from 7th to 11th October 1985.This is a set of 16 photographs of Army Survey Regiment personnel undertaking a navigation exercise in the Wellford Forest, Bendigo 1985. In April 1928 the MMBW had the land and the plans for what they were to construct but the timing of the actual building did not proceed as planned. Before the construction could commence the Great Depression of the 1930s intervened forcing the shelving of its plans. The new owners then offered the land for lease resulting in Frederick Werrett taking the opportunity to take up the land he formerly owned to continue his market gardening activities of growing potatoes, onions and other crops. The land and improvements made by Syme were leased in 1929 to Harry Telford a trainer from New South Wales. Phar Lap grazed there for a short time. [9] However the population of Melbourne continued to grow and the need for a sewerage treatment plant did not go away. In 1939 when the effects of the Depression had dissipated work on the Sewerage Effluent Treatment Plant commenced and the following year in October the Premier of the State, Albert Dunstan, officially commissioned it. The Sewerage Effluent Treatment Plant at Braeside served the communities of south-east Melbourne for thirty five years until 1975. In that year all the sewers that entered the Braeside plant were diverted to the South Eastern Trunk Sewer complex at Carrum.[10] In 1982 the chairman of the MMBW at that time, Alan Croxford, announced that a substantial part of the property at Braeside would be administered by the Parks and Gardens section of MMBW as a public park. Subsequently the responsibilities were transferred to Parks Victoria, the situation that exists today. It is known as “Braeside Park” now. From 1988 to 2021, Legacy held a public speaking contest for young secondary school students. It was initially called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award (JPESA) and later called Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA). Schools were eligible to send along up to 4 representatives to compete in a preliminary round. Participants gave a four minute prepared speech and a two minute impromptu response to a topic. In 1993 the topic was "Music - a distraction to study". President John Stevenson is shown on the far left of the photo with John Straney of the Norwich Group, congratulating the winner, Susie Dowling of Strathmore Secondary College and the runner up, Zayne D'Crus of Mazenod College. The guest speaker in 1993 was the Herald Sun Journalist Keith Dunstan. The following was taken from a programme in 1996: "The Award aim is to promote enhanced oral communication skills for 12-14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy - voluntary service, caring and comradeship - and the need for remembrance. It began in 1988 in the Melbourne area with the support of the Ministry of Education and The Plain English Foundation. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the Stat, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Six items pertaining to Glen Eira Residents Asssociation Inc. 1/Two copies of the minutes of a Committee Meeting of Glen Eira Residents Association Inc., held on 04/12/2001. The minutes cover a range of routine meeting items, as well as the postponed release of the Princes Park Master Plans and the proposed construction of car parks at Caulfield Racecourse. 2/A copy of Glen Eira Residents’ Association Inc.’s 30/05/2003 newsletter, notifying members of matters presently before Glen Eira City Council for purposes of evaluation. Matters include an admonishment to the Council to sort out anomalies between the C25 Amendment (80/20 Plan) and the Melbourne 2030 Plan, the success at convincing the Ministerial panel to adopt GERA’s views regarding the C14 Council Plan for the Caulfield Racecourse, a request for information from the Council regarding the previous year’s rate increase, a request for information from the Council regarding spending on planning for improvements to Princes Park, a call for the Council to improve its consultative procedures, a recommendation that the purpose of Glen Eira News be expanded to the making of suggestions for city improvement, and a notification of the measures implemented to improve the visibility of Caulfield Racecourse’s usability by the public. Includes a black-and-white photograph of Orrong Road, Elsternwick, illustrating what Glen Eira’s roads would look like if lined with trees, which was excluded from Glen Eira News on account of a current prohibition on the making of suggestions for city improvements. 3/Four copies of a booklet entitled ‘A Short Guide to Planning Procedures’, composed 08/2006, which endeavours to explain, as concisely as possible, the methodology by which Glen Eira City Council approves real estate developments and issues planning permits. 4/A booklet containing the minutes of the 05/10/2009 Annual General Meeting of Glen Eira Residents’ Association Inc. Details both routine items and more specific matters of discussion, such as inappropriate charges on the part of the Glen Eira City Council and the proposed inception of a questionnaire to evaluate local residents’ opinion of the Council. 5/A booklet announcing the 07/10/2010 Annual General Meeting of Glen Eira Residents’ Association Inc. at St. John’s Uniting Church, Elsternwick. Front cover details agenda and contains four colour photographs pertaining to public transport (buses, trams, trains) within the city. Interior features president Don Dunstan reflecting on issues relevant to GERA occurring over the preceding twelve months, with an emphasis on the dubious behaviour of the City Council, as well as two colour photographs: one of Dunstan himself and one of traffic at Elsternwick Junction. The rear cover contains the Financial Statement presented to the Meeting. 6Two copies of a printout of an article from the website of Glen Eira Residents’ Association Inc., accessed 19/06/2012, explaining the affects wrought as a result of the implementation of Planning Scheme Amendment C87. Said amendment changes the Planning Scheme protecting neighbourhood character by replacing the previous Significant Character Area (SCA) designation with the new designations of Neighbourhood Character Overlay (NCO) and Design and Development Overlay (DDO). In developing the Amendment, Glen Eira City Council commissioned Planisphere to procure the Planisphere Final Report, in which recommendations regarding the expansion, creation and deletion of SCAs were offered.
