The register documents twenty-five weddings that took place in the Mission to Seamen's church district between the 21st of April, 1947 to the 8th of June 1950. Each certificate is a record of all the information needed to legalise a marriage under Commonwealth law, such as names, dates of birth, marital status, parents and employment. Within the register, there are four Forms of Consent, used when the bride or groom were below the age of twenty-one. This T-shirt was worn by John Barker who was the son of E J Barker who from 1949-1960 was a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB). Then from 1960-1964 was Vice Principal at SMB and was Principal of SMB from 1964-76. Then from 1976-1987 was Foundation Director of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE) until his retirement. The Library at Federation University was named in honour of E J Barker. John completed a Diploma of Mechanical Engineering at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education and a few years later a Bachelor of Engineering. The word 'Policy' represents the White Australia Policy, the word "Lost' stands for those lost including hundreds of family members, 'Jobs' asks why Aboriginal people can only find employment if through Aboriginal positions and policies. Patrice Mahoney is a printmaker, sculptor, weaver, drawer and painter. In 2012 the artist completed a Bachelor of Visual and Media Arts at Monash University’s Churchill campus (from 2014 Federation University's Churchill Campus). The Victorian Indigenous Art Awards 2014 were exhibited and judged at the Art Gallery of Ballarat.This unique edition triptych involves the techniques of intaglio copper plate, pigment, soft ground, open bite, aquatint, spit-bite, stamping, relief, drawing and burnishing on paper. It was awarded the 2014 Victorian Indigenous Art Awards Federation University Acquisitive Award for for work by a Victorian regional artist. Text, colour, metaphor and Aboriginal symbolism are important components of her work. This work expresses the artist's frustration with unjust situations experienced by traditional owners of Nganyaywana country. Debbie LLOYD Debbie Lloyd returned to study in 2005 completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) degree at the University of Ballarat (now Federation University) in 2007, with honours the following year. She returned to the university as Artist in Residence in 2009. During her time at the University Debbie exhibited in many group exhibitions and her work was selected for the National Graduates Show at PICA in Western Australia. Debbie’s first solo exhibition was held at Space22 in Ballarat, towards the end of 2010. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Juli HAAS (1952–2014) Born Melbourne Juli Haas studied under Euan Heng’s at the Monash University Churchill campus. Haas completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1989, a Graduate Diploma of Arts in 1990 and a Master of Arts (Research) in 1995. Juli Haas has won Sir John Sulman prize in 1995 at the Art Gallery of NSW and in 1994 and 1997 the Martin Hanson Memorial Works on Paper Prize. Guest book signed by some of those who attended the Bachelor of Visual Art (Graphic Design / Multimedia) exhibitions and dinners hosted by the University of Ballarat. Names include the students themselves, parents, friends and alumni. Attendees' addresses include Victoria and interstate, USA (eg Florida, California), UK, the Phillipines in addresses. Other entries demonstrate the attendance of some of Victoria's well known designers and agencies at the time, including representatives from local Ballarat studios. Helmut Stenzel was third year lecturer throughout this time. Students putting together these end of year exhibitions were usually overseen by Helmut Stenzel, Steven Roberts and other lecturing staff.This guest book is significant in that it represents a period during which the Graphic Design/Multimedia program was thriving. Dick Richards has been honoured through the naming of a Ballarat School of Mines prize - The R.W. Richards Medal. This medal later became a University of Ballarat prize. It has been awarded annually since 1959 to the Bachelor of Applied Science graduate considered to have achieved the most outstanding academic performance of their course. The award was was introduced to commemorate the long years of service to tertiary education in Ballarat by Mr Richards. Dick Richards joined the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) in 1914, and soon afterwards was granted leave to join an expedition to Antarctica. In 1915 he sailed from Australia with the Antarctic Exploration Expedition, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. Peter WILSON Peter Wilson maintains a ceramic practice at Rosemont Pottery in Bathurst, NSW, as well as working as a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the Charles Sturt University Bathurst Campus. He trained at Macquarie University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1976, and has been making reduced stoneware and tableware and exhibiting ceramics since 1980. Wilson writes extensively about ceramics and obtained a Graduate Diploma of Arts (Visual Arts) from Monash University Gippsland in 1993, a Master of Creative Arts from Wollongong University in 1995 and a Doctor of Creative Arts from the University of Western Sydney in 2003. Ronald EDWARDS PEPPER Gunai Ronald Edwards Pepper is the grandson of Dulcie (Dolly) Mullet and Watson Pepper, Ronald’s family moved to Morwell in the 1960s from Lake Tyers Mission. He graduated from Federation University with a Bachelor of Visual and Media Arts in 2017, and has completed several commissions and participated in numerous exhibitions, in Australia and overseas. David Macknight Jones was born on 31 January 1910, the son of the Rev. David Samuel Jones. He attended University High School, then Ormond college, where, after graduating in Arts, he studied Theology. He obtained his Bachelor of Divinity in 1936, and was ordained in St. Stephen's Church Toowoomba, where his father was the minister. He married Elizabeth Ann McLellan in 1938, and in the same year was inducted as the first Minister in the Western patrol (Timboon), Presbytery of Mortlake, Victoria. He was called to Scots Church Shepparton in 1941, to St. Andrew's Launceston in 1947, to Kew Presbyterian Church in 1950 and to Pascoe Vale in 1965. The 'Collaboration of Commonality and Difference' has its conceptual roots in teh notion that only when we accept and nurture both commonality and difference, can we, humankind, foster unity. With the acceptance and nurturing of commanality and difference, peoples of the world are afforded equal validity for a collaborative approach towards peaceful resolution and possible unity. Integral to the conceptual foundation of the work is the use of papers sourced from around the world. Paper is at once universal and individual, and in this instance is representative of humanking. The jigsaw design draws on the understanding that each piece is integral to the creation and resolution of the whole. Commanality is suggested through repetition, however, no two pieces are the samem emphasizinf the beautym strength and validity of difference. Established in 2004, generously supported by George Lucato, the Lucato Peace Prize was an annual acquisitive art award open to all enrolled Federation University Australia tertiary students and all senior secondary students enrolled at any City of Ballarat secondary school or college. Prizes were awarded to the applicants whose work best illustrates or expresses the idea that 'peaceful alternatives are always preferable to armed confrontations'. First prize of $2250.00 was awarded to Cassandra McArthur for her work, Commonality and Difference, 2014, and it was the last Lucato Peace Prize Awarded after the death of George Lucato in 2014. Donna MARCUS (1960- ) Featuring instantly recognisable kitchenware Donna Marcuus transforms them with colour and placement to create sculptural installations. The individual elements in each work, originally produced in the 1950s and 1960s, are transformed and trigger memories and personal memories through experience of the items in a different, earlier context. Deborah KLEIN (1951- ) Born Melbourne Deborah Klein is an established Australian painter and printmaker who completed a Bachelor of Fine Art, Printmaking, Chisholm Institute of Technology, Melbourne from 1982-1984. She undertook a Graduate Diploma from the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education from 1987 to 1988, and a Master of Arts, (Research), at Monash University, Gippsland Campus from 1995-1997. Klein often explores how women have been forgotten or erased in art and history. Imagery of braided hair and materials related to the stereotypically ‘female’ spheres of handcrafts and weaving are often features of her work.
