Bendigo's geographic location in central Victoria and relatively closeness to Melbourne has meant that capturing the tourist dollar has been an important focus for promotional activities of the City. Businesses such as Nucolorvue Productions serviced the need for high quality printed souvenirs such as these.Mass produced souvenir foldout 'views' of Bendigo packaged in an envelope. Inside contains six double sided postcard sized, hand tinted photographs highlighting local popular sites. Includes text describing Bendigo's geographic location and main industries and attractions. In 1916 he founded the firm E M Vains and Co with his brother Sidney and they operated from Hargreaves Street in Bendigo with branches in Elmore, Mitiamo, Dingee, Knowsley, Heathcote and Prairie. E. M. Vains was a member of the City Council from 1922 - 1926 and was elected Mayor on August 29th, 1924. He played a prominent role in many of the City's community and industry groups and was a member of the Rotary Club which was founded in 1925 and a member of the Corona Lodge of Freemasons. City of Greater Bendigo Portraits...City of Greater Bendigo - Civic Collection Bendigo Town ...Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Mayoress Vains was born Maud Anne Norris and she married Ernest Morton Vains in 1903. Ernest Vains entered council in November 1922 and was a member of the City council from 1922 - 1926. Designed by Andor Mészáros and minted by K.G. Luke, Melbourne, 1951 marked the centenary of Victoria's separation from the colony of New South Wales. As part of the celebrations, the Victorian Government commissioned this medal from Andor Meszaros. Drawing on his classical background, Mészáros developed the imagery for 'Equality and Justice through Freedom'. In 1853 he opened a store in Bendigo, Abbott and Co and from there began a lengthy career as a business man supplying the local community with goods and services including owning and operating the New Times Boot Market & Factory in Pall Mall, Sandhurst, run by his wife, Anne (nee Deague). J H Abbott’s main ambitions were to serve on the local and state councils. He was elected Chairman of the Sandhurst Borough Council in 1860, Mayor of the City of Bendigo in 1891 and was gazetted a Justice of the Peace in 1864. Over his lifetime J H Abbott was closely linked to nearly all the leading institutions in Bendigo and worked for the benefit of local charities. He was trustee of the Bendigo Art Gallery and a Freemason and was said to be the first person in Bendigo to have a telephone installed in1882 between his residence and his business in Pall Mall. After JH Abbott died in 1904 he passed on his businesses to his son JH Abbott Jnr and adopted son RHS Abbott. These businesses continued to trade under the name JH Abbott & Co and today still operates under the name Abbott Supply although the last of the family interests ceased in 1986. Like many men with money of this era he served on local boards such as the Bendigo Base Hospital, Bendigo Y.M.C.A. Bendigo Law Association, South Bendigo Bowling Club and St Andrew's Presbyterian Church. He was also associated with mining companies and financial institutions. His son Alan joined his business in 1914 but died during WW1 after which time his younger son Rex joined and his name appears on this receipt alongside his fathers. City of Greater Bendigo Commerce...City of Greater Bendigo - Civic Collection Bendigo Town ...Benjamin Bolton and his two eldest sons, William and Arthur, began a printing business known as Bolton & Sons on March 25, 1885. The location of the original printing business was in High Street, Bendigo but later moved to Williamson Street where the business underwent a name change to Bolton Bros and expanded into manufacturing paper bags and other stationery lines. In 1902, Bolton Bros moved to 43 Mitchell Street which housed the retail stationery department and the main office, while the printing factory was on the second and third floors. Next door at 47 Mitchell Street the wholesale division and machine service department operated. William and Arthur Bolton and their sons travelled throughout central and northern Victoria selling their own products and representing other companies. Bolton Bros continue to trade today with fifth generation family ownership continuing the tradition. Mayoress Ethel Garvin died in 1952 aged 74 and had been an esteemed member of the Women's Central Auxiliary of the Bendigo Base Hospital, a member of the Baby Health Centre and Mayoral Ladies Auxiliary.
