Constructed for 50th anniversary of the Young Sun newspaper special trains that ran between Upper Ferntree Gully and Belgrave in 1954. In 1954, special trains sponsored by The Sun newspaper, were run to farewell Puffing Billy. They became the catalyst for the creation of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society, and are the reason we still have the railway today. 60th Anniversary of the First Puffing Billy Young Sun Special - On Saturday, 13 December, 2014, the Puffing Billy Young Volunteers Representatives Team celebrated 60 years (plus two days) since the first Young Sun Special. Else Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. The brooch was made for her by another internee in the camp. This silver daisy brooch is an example of the ingenuity of the internees in making use of anything at hand & repurposing it for much more than originally intended. Else-Lore Oertel, with her mother, was a German internee in Camp 3A as a child, from 1940-1945. The pendant was made for her & inscribed with her initials.Hand carved wooden heart pendant for use as jewellery. Small hole in carving on decorative piece on top of heart for inserting thread, chain, etc. to wear. Gifted to John / jack Yeoman who was a guard at Camp 13Camp 13Ashtray carved from sandstone, ( cream with dark pink stripes ), slightly triangle in shape, undulating surface. Heart shaped ashtray carved with a cigarette holder in one edge. Monkey is cream in colour, carved with holes to hold spare cigarettes. Monkey attaches with a spike on it's bottom to the ashtray corner. Ricordo Pirgionero = record of my imprisonment / memory of a prisoner is carved on the top and the bottom of the ashtray

Given to Acting Captain Austin Appleby by and internee. Used by the Appleby family for over 50 years. Originally sent out by the German Red Cross to POW's and internees in the Tatura area in 1943.Artificial Christmas tree on wooden stand decorated with bells, stars and candles, supplied to Camp 3 by the Red Cross. Else Oertel and her daughter Else-Lore were interned in Camp 3A from 1940. Her husband was not interned as he was on a business trip to Germany when war broke out. Friedel Dehnel "Tante Fiffi" made the authentic Bavarian doll and clothes. Friedel, wife of Walter Dehnel, arrived as a young woman from Austria, working in the Victorian snowfields as a chef and was a champion skier. She then became a dressmaker for Melbourne society and insisted that she be interned to be with her husband. She made costumes for the internment camp plays and took over her husband's duties as a cook for Camp A when he was locked up for "insubordination". She was deported with her husband back to Germany after the war and cared for her orphaned nephews and nieces in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.Doll dressed in authentic Bavarian costume. Black wool hat trimmed with gold lace and dried flowers. Gold coloured skirt on dress with sash. Bodice is black with traditional embroidery. White long sleeves with lace trim at cuffs. She then became a dressmaker for Melbourne society and insisted that she be interned to be with her husband.
