Photocopied article titled 'The Deep Mines of Bendigo. Gold at 2, 070 feet'. From The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1954), Friday 16 march 1888, page 5. Article mentions gold being found at the greatest depth at which that metal has yet been obtained in Australia. Mentioned are the six deepest shafts in the Bendigo district. Drawn by mining surveyor and geologist William Henry Cundy, who trained and worked for the Tasmanian Mines Department until 1893, when he moved and settled in Bendigo. Document - ALBERT RICHARDSON COLLECTION: CENTRAL NELL GWYNNE MINE
Two page typed document plus location map. The Central Nell Gwynne gold mine was located off Happy Valley Road, first turn to the left from Marong Road, and up on the hill. The shaft depth was 1,912 ft. The original plant had small wooden poppet legs and a steam winch which were replaced, in 1935/36 by steel poppet legs obtained from the Virginia mine at Eaglehawk. Features and history of the plant are described including the winding engine, air compressor, boilers, and crushing battery. The dividends and gold production fighures are given. TROVE : ''Rocke Tompsitt Pharmaceutical wholesaler Rocke Tompsitt and Co Ltd has returned to the profit list after recording a $20,381 loss during 1976-77. However, annual dividend has been reduced from 3.5c last year to 2.5c. The group announced yesterday an after-tax profit of $312,000 after sales of $27.09 million, up 26.8 per cent. Directors said the improvement in the profit had come from the return to profitability by the Victorian wholesaling company, and the inclusion of the profit from the T. G. Cullum group for a full 12-month period. They said the company's other subsidiaries had continued to trade profitably. The group had continued to operate profitably despite excessive government price control over drugs in pharmaceutical-benefit scheme. Black and white photograph of an image. Poppet head, overhead tramway, mine buildings, dam. Inscriptions: on front at bottom - printed 'United Devonshire'. Inscriptions: on back, type written. 'The 'United Devonshire' - New Chum Line of Reef'. Situated in the Devonshire Valley immediately south of Victoria St, Eaglehawk. Was the leading mine in the field in the years 1883-4 and 1885 during which time it produced 65,898 oz of gold and paid $(?)399,800 in dividends. This mine was then situated on what in January, 1902, became the West Shaft. The Company was then amalgamated with the 'Princess Alexandra' (approx 100 yds further east) which then became the Main Shaft of the 'United Devonshire'. All typed on paper and glued to back of image.
