Two-page typed document plus location map. The Central Nell Gwynne gold mine was located off Happy Valley Road, first turn to the left from Marong Road, and up on the hill. The shaft depth was 1,912 ft. The original plant had small wooden poppet legs and a steam winch which were replaced, in 1935/36 by steel poppet legs obtained from the Virginia mine at Eaglehawk. Features and history of the plant are described including the winding engine, air compressor, boilers, and crushing battery. The dividends and gold production figures are given. The City of Greater Bendigo Council was constituted on 7 April 1994 as part of a statewide program of local government reform enacted between 1993 and 1995. The reform process reduced the number of councils from 210 to 78. The City of Greater Bendigo has been appointed as the successor in law for the City of Bendigo, the Rural City of Marong, the Borough of Eaglehawk and the Shires of Huntly and Strathfieldsaye and has assumed any rights, assets and liabilities of these abolished councils. On 18 November 1994 the City of Greater Bendigo Council has been appointed as the successor in law for the Shire of McIvor and has assumed any rights, assets and liabilities of this abolished council. On the 19 January 1995 the City of Greater Bendigo Council has been appointed as the successor in law for the Redesdale district of the Shire of Metcalfe. The Borough of Eaglehawk was a local government area which covered the northwestern suburbs of the regional city of Bendigo and covered an area of 14.54 square kilometres (5.6 sq mi). Eaglehawk was first incorporated as a borough on 29 July 1862. It had nine councillors, who represented the entire borough. Councillors met at the Town Hall (incorporating the Star Cinema) at the intersection of Sailors Gully Road and Loddon Valley Highway, Eaglehawk. The Town hall has always been the centre of the Borough's activities and was built in 1901 on the site of an earlier town hall which had stood on the location since 1865. The Victorian Heritage Database notes: "The present building replaced this earlier building and was opened on 14 August 1901. The architects were the Melbourne firm of Wilkinson and Permewan. As a much larger and more sumptuous building of brick and stone featuring a central clock tower, the new hall reflected prevailing architectural fashion and was a remarkable investment for a town consisting predominantly of poor mining families. The condition of the town hall is substantially as built. The design is almost identical to the Castlemaine Town Hall." Gold was discovered on Victoria Hill in 1854 and by 1861, 1,200,000 ounces of gold had been extracted from the site. The first claim was bought for 80 pounds by Prussian immigrant Christopher Ballerstedt and his son Theodore. Christopher Ballerstedt was nicknamed the "Father of the Hill" and was the first to prove that gold reefs extended below the surface. His 200-foot plus mine shafts yielded quartz rich with gold, inspired other miners, and were instrumental in Bendigo becoming the world's deepest and richest goldfield. The site still features relics of nineteenth century mining including quartz crushing machinery and the foundations of George Lansell’s 180 mine. These features are characteristic of Bendigo’s mining history and represent two prominent nineteenth century miners, Christopher Ballerstedt and George Lansell, who held important roles in the development of Bendigo. Victoria Hill Quartz Gold Mines are registered as a site of significance. The site is of historical, archaeological and scientific importance to Victoria. The mines represent the symbolic heart of Bendigo’s gold mining history and the importance that mining played in wealth creation and the development of Victoria. The diggings reserve is accessed from the rear of Albert Richardson Reserve located at 40-56 Marong Road, Ironbark. The site has steep and unformed paths and is closed to the public at dusk. It is important to stay to the paths to avoid the diggings.
