Photograph of Geelong No. 16 at the Chilwell terminus 23/6/1949, with the J. Cahill Milk bar, shop in the background. Would appear the driver / motorman has just entered the end to drive back into town. Both poles are still on the overhead. Tram has the destination of Chilwell. Originally thought that the photo was by Ken McCarthy, via Bill Parkinson - see email from Greg King of 13-9-2018, but on locating the negative from the Wal Jack collection, received by Keith Kings, record photographer revised. A print from a glass negative that has been reused to document an item of equipment used on a farm. The equipment is vehicular and designed to be hauled behind another form of transport, either equine or mechanical. On the vehicle, there is a motor at the rear. The main part of the vehicle is a barrel that might have been used to hold liquid or solids. The original photograph would appear to be a scene adjacent to a beach. Dry plate photography was a photographic technology invented by R.L. Maddox in 1871. Images were captured on a glass plate covered in a gelatin emulsion, which acted as a photographic negative. A negative could then be stored to develop at a later time in a dark room. The introduction of this technology allowed for greater flexibility in photographic practice outside of indoor studios, as earlier wet plate photographic technology required immediate exposure and development. Dry plate photography was superseded by the invention of celluloid film in the early twentieth century. This object forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of social life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history, social history, and the history of photography.Box of dry glass negative plates for developing photographs. Each negative is a copy of a selected photograph from the album of Mr Martin Brown. The photographs include sheep being loaded onto the SS Woolgar at Portland, Barunah Plans and Wingeel stations.
