Newsletter, The Gesture - The Voice of the Deaf and Dumb of Australasia October November December 1911
"The Gesture" was an independent organ of the Deaf and Dumb having no direct connection with any single organisation. Its aim was to help all agencies established to promote the advancement of the Deaf and Dumb. The aim was to be the "Voice" of the Deaf and Dumb of Australasia". To educate the public as to the real condition and needs of the afflicted brothers and sisters, to bring prominently before the hearing and speaking community the peculiar difficulties and obstacles that Deaf Mutes have to encounter in the battle of life. The magazine was named "The Gesture" with the single object of impressing upon the minds of the hearing friends the uncontrovertable fact that whatever the system of instruction the Deaf Mute invariably resorts to the manual alphabet and the language of gesture as the only expedient means of communication with those similarly afflicted. The "Gesture" is significant as the first national newsletter of the Australian Deaf.No. 13 New Series; Size 29Hx14W; 24 pages (2 copies)deaf newsletter, vicdeaf, newsletter, deaf and dumb newsletter, alice butteridge, lone hand, c. a. jeffries, adult deaf and dumb society, lake park, blackburn, victorian deaf and dumb institution, ernest j. d. abraham, mrs abraham, miss a. graham, our monthly letter, victorian deaf school lacrosse club, adult deaf cricket club,f. j. rose, john jennings, matthew robert burns, henry weedon, agar wynne, w.s. keast,r. solly, e. r. peacock, h. sumner martin, harold kent, g. g. mercy, w. a. dickens, hugh munro, m. l. miller, mr mcbride, dr mccallum, young men's club, sol moss, oriana, eustace miles, robert p. macgregor, world's congress of the deaf, b. f. austin -

Work on paper - Ephemera: Theatre program - Miss Hook of Holland, 24 & 26 June 1933, H Bowley, Printer, 192 Canterbury Road, Canterbury, June 1933
"Miss Hook of Holland" is a musical comedy (described as a "Dutch Musical Incident") in two acts, with music and lyrics by Paul Rubens and book by Austen Hurgon and Rubens. It opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre, London, on 31 January 1907, and had a successful run of 462 performances. A synopsis of the plot can be found at https://www.guidetomusicaltheatre.com/shows_m/miss_hook_holland.htm This was one of a number of productions of the Surrey Hills Amateur Operatic Society during the 1930s. The society formed in 1931 and its first production was "The Cingalee", followed in 1932 by "The Arcadians". Other productions were "Princess Ju-Ju", "The Quaker Girl", "The Hook of Holland" and "The Country Girl". Apart its cultural and social importance, the aim of the Society was to raise funds for charity. Mrs Constance Clucas was a driving force behind the productions. A comprehensive account of the society's activities is found in 'A history of Surrey Hills' Sporting clubs and Cultural Groups" by Ken James. This and other programs of the Surrey Hills Amateur Operatic Society provide insight into the cultural life of Surrey Hills in the 1930s.Cream-coloured stapled program printed in brown of a musical comedy in 2 acts. Functional object - Stoneware Demijohn, 1910
Mr Robert Crone Phillips was born in Stanley, Victoria and later moved to Wangaratta where he worked at Pinkertons and Sons. On 1 April 1912 he purchased the grocery, ironmongery, and wine and spirits business conducted in Sydney Street, Wodonga, by Mr. D. M. Stavely. This business was beside the old Wodonga Police Station. He received a spirit merchant's license under the new Licensing Act in the Wodonga Licensing Court on 20 March 1912. This was the first occasion on which spirit merchants' licenses have been granted by the court. This license was renewed annually until November 1920. On Friday 15 July 1921, a fire occurred in which Phillips grocer’s shop and a neighbouring draper’s shop, owned by Mr. R. W. McLeish, were seriously damaged. In August 1921 Robert Philips filed for insolvency with assets of £660 10/ and liabilities of £1126 19/6. The cause of insolvency listed was loss sustained by fire and the pressure of creditors. Mr. Phillips retired to Wangaratta. He passed away in 1948. The demijohn is of local significance as it represents an artefact from a local business. Its provenance is clear due to the inscription in the item. It is representative of ceramic wares from the early 1900s.A ceramiic demijohn with business name"R C PHILLIPS/ WODONGA"wodonga businesses, sydney road wodonga, r c phillips -
