Yields information about replacement of W class trams with Z ...Night time flash-lit photograph taken from under a nearby shop verandah shows W2 class tram 244 just arrived at a wet Elgar Road terminus. One passenger hurries away from the tram in the rain while others in the front saloon stand to exit. The destination sign reads "Camberwell Depot, 70", the trolley poles are you to be reset and the last of three off-side weather blinds is being lowered. An advertisement for local radio station 3AW and presenter Derryn Hinch is fixed to the side of the tram. Official M&MTB photograph showing W5 class 727 after removal of its centre passenger doorways in 1969. Its other doorways are closed with canvas blinds and the destination reads "Special". Tram 727 was the first of over 80 W5 class cars to have their centre doorways removed as part of a tramcar modernisation process during the 1970s. With the replacement of the M&MTB by the Metropolitan Transit Authority in 1983, many of these W5s were then fitted with driver operated sliding doors between 1983 and 1986, being reclassified as SW5s.Yields information about W5 class trams.
