Photograph - W5 727 at Preston Workshops, Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board, c1969

Historical information

Official M&MTB photograph showing W5 class 727 after removal of its centre passenger doorways in 1969. Its other doorways are closed with canvas blinds and the destination reads "Special". Tram 727 was the first of over 80 W5 class cars to have their centre doorways removed as part of a tramcar modernisation process during the 1970s. With the replacement of the M&MTB by the Metropolitan Transit Authority in 1983, many of these W5s were then fitted with driver operated sliding doors between 1983 and 1986, being reclassified as SW5s.
