This file contains one item: 1/A loose-leaf, 23-page document titled ‘The History of Glen Huntly’, by Alfred R. Jones, dated 20/06/1991, describing the history of the suburb. The author has drawn heavily from the 4 sources noted in the bibliography. Subjects covered include the ship the suburb is named after, the suburb’s State School, the suburb’s churches, the Rosstown Railway and Sugar Mill, the origin of the name of Carnegie, the suburb’s aerodrome, and the beautification of the Glen Huntly Shopping Centre. The final 12 pages consist of 9 appendices relating to the aforementioned subjects. Appendix A is a typewritten letter from Ron McLeod, secretary of the Place Names Committee, to Mr. D. R. Aylen, CEO of the City of Caulfield, notifying the latter of the alteration of the name ‘Glenhuntly’ to ‘Glen Huntly’. Appendix B is a list of the ministers of St. David’s Uniting Church from its formation in 1916 to the present. Appendix C identifies the persons portrayed in St. David’s stained glass windows. Appendix D is a poster announcing the auction of 41 blocks of land between Hawthorn and Bambra Road formerly owned by William Ross, plus a map identifying said land blocks and anither fir locality. Appendix E is an A4 plan of the Rosstown Railway. Appendix F is a drawing of the Rosstown Sugar Mill. Sheet of foolscap size paper, printed both sides as a SEC Electricity Supply Department, Provincial Tramways, Trip way bill showing Motorman/Conductor name, traffic number, day, date, trip details, time route, tram, ticket prices, numbers and number sold. Used by L. Walker, No. 54 on Saturday Sept 18, 1971, on tram No. 35 between Sebastopol and Lydiard St. North. Shows opening numbers in four figures and the closing numbers in three. Gives details of 12 trips from commencing at 7.55pm and finishing at 11.55pm. Has inscription on form "The Last Trip Way Bill on abandonment of Tramways Ballarat Sept 18, 1971, Lew Walker, Conductor / Motorman". See Reg Item 259 and 1057 for references. Question - did they do Trip Way Bills the following day, the last day on Sept. 19 1971? Yields information about the appearance of Sturt St following the introduction of electric trams in 1905 and has a strong association with the work of Sovereign Hill and Rose Stereograph Co.Postcard reproduction - sepia coloured - of an ESCo tram near the intersection of Doveton St. and Sturt St. travelling west along the south side of Sturt Street. Photo appears to be taken soon after opening of the electric trams, as the tramway is well paved compared to the rest of the street which shows vehicle tracks etc. Small horse drawn vehicle crossing in front of the photograph. Shows buildings along the north side of Sturt St. and the building at the SE corner of Doveton St. ESCo tram has destination board on the front dash of the tram. Yields information about the correspondence that was sent to various parties about the opening of tram tracks for underground services in Ballarat.Letter on SECV letterhead, "Ballarat Electricity Supply and Tramways", not dated, gives phone number, address, duplicated in blue ink, titled "Crossing Under Tramway Tracks", consisting of two foolscap sheets and one quarto sheet, pinned together in the top left hand corner. Would have been written as a base letter to go various bodies, has a Mr. Hornabrook's signature printed on it. Outlines the processes that have to be undertaken in order to install pipelines under tram tracks. Allows for Emergency installations, gives depths and installation requirements. The third sheet is an application form to install the service. Has a strong ...Black and white print of ESCo 17, photographed at the depot entry with a driver, conductor, and another employee in uniform standing alongside. Has a destination sign of Sturt St on the front dash panel of the tram, showing the seating arrangements, uniforms, and step arrangements. Has extensive notes written in ink by Wal Jack on the rear, giving details of the tram, driver, and conductor, colour scheme. Dated 30-5-1906. Gives names of J Quirk, Fritz A Thies. See items 5104 and 4290 for the same photograph. Yields information about the ESCo tramcars and uniforms at the time of opening of the tramway in 1906. Set of 9 A3 photocopy of a drawing - of a dyeline print that had been mounted onto a cloth backing and had been kept up to date with regard to extensions and closures or opening and closing - titled - "Plan of Tramway System - showing route mileage of electric tramways" - Principal Junctions and intersections shown diagrammatically. Map of system shown at 40 chains to the inch. Copy of Drawing No. P6050. Shows crossovers, signal cabins, automatic points, closed cable tram lines in the city area, Port Melbourne, roads, railways and stations. Has extensions to Mill Park up to April 1987. Shows the Port Melbourne, North Melbourne (Spencer and Abbotsford Sts) and Collingwood cable lines, the Footscray system lines and the Point Ormond lines.
