These booklets were given to subscribers to the Warrnambool Standard newspaper as an almanac for the year 1923. Warrnambool Standard Almanacs were published from 1875 to 1930. They contain much local information on Warrnambool and district about businesses, local government officials, harbour management, banks, schools, churches, societies and organizations etc. The Warrnambool Standard newspaper was established in 1872 and continues to this day. These booklets are of high significance as they contain valuable information on Warrnambool and district for the year 1923. They are important research tools for those studying and writing the history of Warrnambool and district. Copy one is of particular significance because it was owned by the son of George Barber, a well-known solicitor who opened a legal practice in Warrnambool in 1855. George Barber Senior died in 1879 and it appears that a member or members of his family went to live in the Maryborough district as this copy came into the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society via the Midlands Historical Society. These are soft cover booklets of 107 pages with several pages of advertisements at the back and front of the booklets. The covers are cream-coloured with blue lettering on the front and an advertisement on the back. These covers are stained, with copy two more stained than copy one. The booklets contain several blue-coloured and black and white photographs and other illustrations. Scrapbook (based on 1933 Nestle Diary - diary has 26 pages of information relating to Nestlé’s products pre and post-natal). Entries written in ink, finishes on Feb 15, probably written by a teenage girl. Diary is then used as a scrapbook with newspaper cuttings pasted on first 107 pages. Diary entries continue on Pages 122 to 158 [related to details of a 'Rose' and a marigold being observed; references to Guides (Girl)]. Several loose cuttings are in book (dates later than 1933). Contextual or historic information One of a series of photographs, taken by Edgar James Dower in the second decade of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Olinda, his family later moved to Surrey Hills. He worked as an adult as a clerk in the city office of the Metropolitan Gas Company, and in his role as a 'collector', he was able to photograph scenes including the construction of tramlines and associated buildings in Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Surrey Hills. Later he established a real estate agency with his brother - the E.J. Dower Real Estate Agency, Dandenong Office.The image is an historically significant record of the development of transport infrastructure which was used to connect Victorians in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This development resulted from increases in population and the consequent extension of Melbourne's suburbs. The photographs, both individually and collectively, richly detail the labour of workers and the tools and machinery used to create and extend Melbourne's tram network in the years preceding and during World War 1.Two faded original horizontal photographs, mounted on vertical card showing the original railway level crossing in Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, before a railway overpass was constructed and the laying of the electric tramline. This book is of general as well as local interest as it gives short biographies of prominent 19th century Australian men. Included in the book are people of local importance to Warrnambool and district – Dr Fleetwood, Dr Singleton, Rev. George Tait, James Stewart Butters, Stephen Henty and Dr Thomas Scott. This book is important because it has interesting and informative biographies of prominent Australian men of the 19th century but it is of greater importance to Warrnambool’s historians because of its biographies of men who were influential in Warrnambool’s history. It is also of interest that the book has the signature of Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949. Worland was also a great Warrnambool historian, preserving items of historical importance, writing on local history and talking about our history for a number of years in a series of broadcasts on Warrnambool’s 3YB. It is due to him that we have ‘Australian Representative Men’ in our collection today. This is a hard cover book with a black cover and gold-coloured lettering on the spine. The pages are unnumbered. The book contains 107 biographies of well-known 19th century men in Australia, together with their portraits fronted by a piece of tissue paper. Norman Thomas Henshaw operated a tailor's business in High Street, Wodonga for several years. He was born in Albury in 1891, the sone of WIlliam Henshaw and Ellen nee Goldsworthy. At various times, Norman operated a tailor business in Albury, Rutherglen, Beechworth and Wodonga. His business in High Street, Wodonga was advertised as being located opposite the Fire Brigade Hall. Mr. Henshaw died 10 September 1966 and his wife Agnes died on 30 July 1999, aged 107. They are buried in the Waugh Rd. cemetery in Albury, NSWThis item has local significance as it represents business which operated in Wodonga in the 1920s.
