The Greensborough Hotel is on the corner of Main Street and Hailes Street Greensborough. Built in the early 1920s, the hotel has been refurbished and extended over the years. In 2018 the exterior of the hotel was painted grey as in this photo. October Meeting (Newsletter No. 242, Oct. 2018) At our Society meeting at 8.00pm on Wednesday 10th October 2018 we will explore ideas about what is considered to be the ‘Spirit of Eltham’. We will view a video produced for the Shire of Eltham in response to the 1985 Victorian Local Government Commission Report titled ‘The Restructure of Local Government in Victoria – Principles and Program’ (the Morris review). The recommendation was to amalgamate the Shires of Eltham and Diamond Valley, something that Eltham Council did not support as being appropriate for the shire or compatible with the ‘Spirit of Eltham’. This photograph shows remnants of the Mernda Market, established in 1919 as a livestock market. It was sited on Plenty Road in the carpark of the Bridge Inn Hotel. It evolved into a weekend 'trash and treasure' market although livestock auctions still took place on Mondays. Following the amalgamation of football and netball clubs, this ticket reflects both clubs and the Junior Football Club. This membership ticket belonged to a member of the Partington family. Gary Partington is a Life Member of the football club and a GHS member. Only Lennie, the halfwit roustabout from the store, follows and observes him, and, by riding O'Day's horse out of town, prevents his friend from travelling with the drovers who get caught in the police trap.
