The Linton library opened in 1871 under the auspices of the Linton Mechanics' Institute. It was later funded by grants for Free Libraries, and operated as a lending library until the 1960s. It was known at different times as the Linton Public Library and the Linton Free Library. This photograph shows a somewhat dilapidated "Linton Free Library". The verandah shown in earlier photos of this building has been removed. The building next to it is the former Nelson family home and Nelson Bros. undertaker's office, which was restored in 1987 to become the LDHS Resource Centre.Colour photographs taken in 1988 showing front of a building with a square, pedimented parapet. Until Linton was connected to the statewide electricity grid in 1939, this gas light was used to light the altar at the Presbyterian Church in Linton.Curved gas light wall bracket, ornamented with leaves. One end designed to be attached to a wall, the other end has a valve, presumably to control the flow of gas. Original photograph thought to have been taken about 1872 (before the building was renovated and enlarged), however copy in "Bank of New South Wales" file gives date 1862, most likely the year the bank was built. This building was later known as "Traquair House". William Wilson was a staunch member of the Linton Methodist congregation and a local preacher. The souvenir is believed to have been made by R.E. Hyatt.A home-made souvenir of Linton, which consists of a colour photograph taken in Sussex Street of the Linton Post Office and Bank of New South Wales buildings, with an early model Ford car parked in the street. The photograph has been mounted on a square of cardboard, and a border made of small green squares drawn or printed around it. "Linton" is inscribed within the border underneath the photograph. The square of cardboard with the photograph on it has in turn been mounted on a square of very thick cardboard, which has had its edges varnished. "My Home Town" and "R.E. Ethel Bersey was born at Linton in 1882. She married James Wishart in 1910.
