The Missions to Seamen building, designed by architect Harry Norris and built in 1937, was located on the site proposed 50 years later for development by the Sandridge Development Company. The building fell into disrepair after it was closed by the church in 1972, but enjoyed a brief and energetic period in 1987-90 when it was used as a community arts centre. These documents record the campaign waged to save the building from demolition. It was demolished in October 1995.Material relating to a campaign to save the Missions to Seamen building, 1987-88: items relating to an open day at the Missions to Seamen building for Heritage Week, 22 to 25 April 1988, including notes for accompanying guided tourmission to seamen, arts and entertainment, mission arts centre, national trust of victoria, harry a norris, pat grainger, barry merat, brian couldrey, town planning, heritage -

Plant specimen - Branch, Port Jackson fig tree, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Dec 1999
... the planning scheme. Local landscape architect, Ray PICKFORD, landscape... the planning scheme. Local landscape architect, Ray PICKFORD, landscape ...The tree was chopped down December 1999 in spite of local opposition, to make way for a planned development of the church hall. The application was refused by Port Phillip Council but approved by VCAT in a contentious decision. There was conflicting advice about the health of this tree which at that time enjoyed no protection under the planning scheme. Local landscape architect, Ray PICKFORD, landscape architect and owner (at that time) of Morley's house at cnr Farrell and Nott St, was so distressed by this action that he stripped in an attempt to generate media attention. Subsequently, ward councillor Julian HILL purchased a portion of the timber from a wood recycler and it was re-made into timber benches for the refurbished Port Melbourne Library.Portion of branch from Port Jackson fig located in the grounds of the Holy Trintiy Church Hall, demolished December 1999 (Ref 1421)religion - anglican (holy trinity), built environment, demolitions -

Photograph, Ithaca House, 2016
Ithaca House located at 329 Elizabeth Street Melbourne has been the site of the clubrooms of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society since 1958. Over the decades the club rooms have served as a meeting place and a venue for many social, cultural and fundraising activities. Prior to the building of Ithaca House, the clubrooms been located at Michael's Building, corner Lonsdale and Elizabeth Streets since 1917.In 1956, the Ithacans of Melbourne purchased a site, formerly two shops, at 329-335 Elizabeth Street for £35,000, with a view to building their own club rooms. A three storey building, a stone's throw from the old Michael's clubrooms, was finally erected in 1958 at a cost of £25,000. This was achieved by capital raising from the membership in the form of non-redeemable £10 and £50 debentures (1957-58). Plans were drawn up by the Australian born and newly qualified Ithacan architect, Nicholas Sofarnos (Sofianos). The then President Eustathios (Stathis) Vlassopoulos was key driver of the project. Christ Church was constructed in 1854-57 and designed in Decorated Gothic style by Albert Purchase & Charles Swyer. It was enlarged in 1874 and 1881 to the designs of Sydney W Smith. It is one of four main buildings constructed on land granted to the Church of England in 1855 and named Church Square. The other buildings are the bishop's residence, vicarage and parish hall. Heritage Victoria describes it as a 'rare and significant square in the history of town planning in Victoria which demonstrates the importance of the church to the community'. It is built from rarely used undressed random coursed sandstone from Point King Sorrento. It is located at 14 Acland Street, St Kilda. The triangular rose window is said to have been modelled on Lichfield Cathedral and shows outstanding craftsmanship. According to Heritage Victoria, the only other known example in Victoria is at St Georges Presbyterian Church in East St Kilda, designed by the same architect, Albert Purchas.colour photograph unmountedrose window, acland street, purchase, swyer, st kilda, christ church -

The triangular rose window is said to have been modelled on Lichfield Cathedral and shows outstanding craftsmanship. According to Heritage Victoria, the only other known example in Victoria is at St Georges Presbyterian Church in East St Kilda, designed by the same architect, Albert Purchas. The Church has a varied collection of stained glass, including work by leading stained glass firms and artists in Victoria in the nineteenth and early twentieth century: Ferguson & Urie, William Montgomery and Brooks Robinson. The 'shipwreck window,' north west transept, is an historically significant memorial window dedicated to Miles and William Dalzell Nicholson, the second and third sons of the Hon. William Nicholson, M.L.A, a Lord Mayor of Melbourne and Premier of Victoria in the 1850s. Miles, died in England on 27 April 1874. His younger brother William died in the wreck of the ‘British Admiral’ off King Island on 23 May 1874. The images show the condition of the church at the time they were taken (c 2012). Signs of deterioration can be seen. The bell is not rung any more because of damage to the stonework. There has been some remedial work since and the National Trust of Australia conducted a heritage restoration appeal.churches, acland street, purchase, swyer, st kilda, christ church -
