This photograph of 'Harmony Vale' homestead was taken by Daisy Rowse c1917. It is a copy of the original. 'Harmony Vale' was the home built c1860 by early settler Jabez Richardson and his wife Sarah Ann. Jabez Richardson arrived in 1855 with the Child and Jeeves families. The building and barn stood until 1933. Large barn built c1886 by Isaac Jeeves the younger on his property where the homestead 'Shiloah' stood. The barn was reputedly made from timbers split from only one messmate tree. Originally the home of Isaac Jeeves, brother of Ellis Jeeves, ‘Shiloah’ was enlarged to take guests in the early 1900s. It was situated close to a beautiful fern gully and Isaac and his family capitalised on this by setting out walking tracks through the ferns. They charged 1/- to walk through and this included afternoon tea in a garden setting. ‘Shiloah’ was a popular tourist attraction but the making of the Olinda Creek Road destroyed the fern gullies and, by the 1930s, it was all finished. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph showing a large wooden structure surrounded by trees. The c1950s Jelbart residence and the c1945 barn, the garden and the gate posts and the surrounding site to the extent of the title boundaries. How is it significant? The Jelbart house and barn are historically and architecturally significant to the Shire of Nillumbik. The garden and the gate posts are historically and aesthetically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik. Why is it significant? The Jelbart house and barn are historically significant because they are unusually large and because together they comprise one of the oldest groups of substantial mud brick buildings erected during the 20th century in the Shire of Eltham and foreshadow the large mud brick residences of the 1960s and 1970s for which the area is well known (Criteria A & B). The buildings are architecturally significant because their construction (using timber post framing and mud brick walling) is a characteristic feature of what became known as the 'Eltham style'- which was prevalent in the area during the mid and latter parts of the 20th century (Criteria D & A). The album tells the story of ports visited by Allan Charles Quinn during his service on board the M/S "Mongabarra". He signed on in San Francisco on December 1, 1949. Note this trip overlapped with the Album (00278) which documents the next trip Quinn made to Africa out of Gothenburg. The album preserves a 1950s perspective of a Merchant Seaman and his experience of the respective Ports at that time. This is a photograph of Councillor Donald Munro who represented Central Riding on the Orbost Shire Council. Donald Munro, with his brother, Archie carried on a boot-making business in one of the rooms of a three-storeyed barn at Lochiel. The Munros were musically inclined and through them a band was formed in 1889. Donald Munro was involved in many of the town's activities. (More in Mary Gilbert's Personalities and Stories of the Early Orbost District).This item is associated with the Orbost Shire Council. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. This booklet tells the story of the establishment of the Allansford Presbyterian church. First services were held in a Mr. Irvine’s barn at Wangoom by Rev Andrew Begg. The first church was built shortly afterwards towards the end of 1861. The first minister was Rev Robert Sutherland (1862-1876). The booklet gives a brief outline of history of the ministers who followed. Foreign missionaries are mentioned as are the men of the Kirk session.
