This book prize was awarded to Theophilus Heugist Serjeant in the fifth form for first prize for arithmetic. Theo enrolled at Ballarat College in 1884 at the age of 12. Theo's brother, Alfred George Serjeant, also enrolled at the same time at the age of 17. In the original register parent/guardian is listed as R.M Serjeant and their residence as Yarrowee Hall.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in brown calf with black and gilt decorations on front cover and black decoration with college crest embossed on back cover. Six raised bands on spine with gilt lettering on second compartment and the remaining compartments with gilt decoration. Slight detachment of spine with foxing on pages. These photographs were taken at the Corps Day parade at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo in July 1983. This was the Director of the Survey Corps – COL John Hillier’s last parade at Fortuna before his retirement. COL Hillier, often referred to as ‘NRJ’ (his initials) was Director for five years. COL Alex W. Laing attended the parade as his successor, seen in the foreground of photos .5P and .6P. COL Hillier was appointed a couple of years later to the honorary position of Colonel Commandant of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1989 to 1993. COL Laing was Director of RASvy from July 1983 to November 1988. Percy Richards taught Architecture and Building Construction at The Ballarat Art School - a division of Ballarat School of Mines from 1918-1921. He was responsible for the design of a number of buildings in the district. This item is the "Specification of work required to be done and materiaals required for construction of the new A.N.A. Building at the corner of Sturt, Albert and Lewis Streets, Ballarat. Prepared by and to the satisfaction of P.S. Richards, A.R.V.I.A. Architect and subject to the General Conditions of Contract." "BALLARAT CITY A.N.A. BALLARAT, Wednesday — The Ballarat City branch, A.N.A., which was formed nearly 50 years ago, ranks fourth on the association records, but several of the members were prominent in establishing the association in Melbourne a year or two earlier. On the past half-year's operations the total funds increased by £1558/18/3 to £29.389/11/11. The membership now totals 949. The committee recommended that as the property at the corner of Sturt and Albert Streets, which had been intended as the site of a new hall, had been sold, steps should he taken to remodel the present hall, and bring It up to date. In the course of celebrating the Ballarat School of Mines centenary in 1970, the School Coundil launched a building appeal for erection of a Great Hall at tehe then new Mount Helen campus of its tertiary division. In 1976 the tethertiary division of the School of Mines was, by government decision, merger with another tertiary institution in Ballarat to vreate the Ballarat College of Advanced Education while the remainder of the School of Mines continued to be based at Lydiard Street serving the needs of Technical and Further Education. The 1870s Founders Hall, erected from the provceeds of the Centenary Appeal for a sum of approximately $800,000, commemorats the intiative of the founders of the original School of Mines and its "descendants", including Ballarat C.A.E., as well as formal technical education in Australia. The hall accomodates approximately 670 people in theatre type seating and was intended for multiple purpose use by community groups as well as by the College. Construction of the Hall commenced in 1878.
