Ceramic - Artwork - Ceramics, Ballarat School of Mines Sherry Glasses, c1951
Marjorie Evelyn GARNER Although not a fully enrolled student, Majorie Garner attended Pottery classes at the School of Mines) run by Neville Bunning. She also took advantage of other classes offer to 'non-students' such as oil painting classes for women run by Geoff Mainwaring. These popular extension programmes promoted the Ballarat School of Mines and their Technical Art School, especially among middle-class women who would otherwise have had little connection with the institution. Majorie was married to Leslie Garner, the Principal of the Ballarat Junior Technical School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. Ceramic, Tony Nankervis, Dry Glazed Lidded Form by Tony Nankervis, 1986
Nankervis prefers the pre-Industrial Revolution method of firing pottery, involving heating the kiln by burning wood for five days, to the modern, quicker methods using gas or electricity. The distinctive surfacing in wood-fired ceramics is generated by the ash and volatile salts from the burning wood. "Because the wood ash and salts blush the ceramic pieces in the kiln, the finished work tends to take on the nature of the firing process," he said. "One colleague has described the process as painting with fire."(https://www.strathnairn.com.au/studios/artist-in-residence/montessa-maack-ursula-burgoyne-jen-lyall-and-vicki-grima-5ndd6, accessed 09 July 2021)Tony NANKERVIS Tony Nankervis taught ceramics from 1984 when the university was the Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education from 1984. before moving to Southern Cross University (SCU) in 1994. He retired from full time teaching in 2004. Nankervis was a pioneer of the long wood-fired ceramics technique in Australia: a technique he has been practising since the late 1970s Nankervis prefers the pre-Industrial Revolution method of firing pottery, involving heating the kiln by burning wood for five days, to the modern, quicker methods using gas or electricity. The distinctive surfacing in wood-fired ceramics is generated by the ash and volatile salts from the burning wood. "Because the wood ash and salts blush the ceramic pieces in the kiln, the finished work tends to take on the nature of the firing process," he said. "One colleague has described the process as painting with fire. There are particular qualities that only come from firing in that way, he said. "If you see some of these older ceramics, particularly from Asia, the surface qualities are discernible from the surfaces generated by post-Industrial fuels." La Perruque, 2018
Laresa KOSLOFF Laresa Kosloff makes performative videos, Super-8 films, hand-drawn animations, sculpture, installations and live performance works, all linked by an interest in the body and its agency within the everyday. Recurrent themes include humour and tension between received cultural values, individual agency and free will. La Perruque won the 2018 Guirguis New Art Prize. ‘Laresa is a worthy winner having been dedicated to her practice over many years and creating a work that is intelligently structured and steeped in satire, epitomising what we all either know or experience at work or in office life. By her clever collaging of characters, editing and story adaptation, Laresa has created an impressive fictional and insightful work that by way of its very construction cleverly illustrates and articulates aspects of Australian culture,’ (Shelley Hinton, Curator Federation University’s Post Office Gallery)A USB and a portable hard drive in a black archival box with a signed certificate. Her short film La Perruque is made entirely out of commercial stock footage, generic material produced for corporate advertising, which is strangely artificial, simplistic and loaded with images of success and productivity. Kosloff uses this footage to tell the tale of an office worker who is secretly trying to write a novel during work hours. The silent footage has been dubbed using voice actors and assembled into a story that subverts commercial representations of office life. The title refers to a French term that translates into 'wearing the wig', used to describe a situation of secretly working on personal projects during work time.guirguis new art prize, video -

Work on paper, 'Fallen and Lost', by Lara Russell, 2013
Lara RUSSELL Lara Russell was a student of Graphic Design and Multimedia at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy when she undertook this work. The work won the 2013 Lucato Peace Prize. Established at Federation University Australia in 2004, the Lucato Peace Prize is offered annually with the generous support of Mr George Lucato. The Prize is an annual acquisitive award, open to all enrolled Federation University Australia students and senior secondary students enrolled at a City of Ballarat secondary school or college. The winner of the Lucato Peace Prize is decided annually by a formal judging panel and is awarded to the student whose work best illustrates or expresses 'peaceful alternatives are always preferable to armed confrontations'. This artwork comprises 12 postcards each with an individual word in a gold box. Artist's Statement: The collection of postcards creates a sentence that reflects on war being an opposition to life itself. The instant we agree to destruction and conflict, we ourselves have lost the freedom and peace to live a healthy and prosperous life by giving all out hear to the cause of war.
