Document - Alexander Gibson McPherson Letters of Administration 1884, 1884
Tait collection: item 35 of 62 This is a document giving details of the Letters of Administration following the death of Alexander Gibson McPherson, a farmer of Rochester, Victoria, in December 1883. He died intestate and left an estate worth £215. The beneficiary was his sister, Mary Wright of Somerton. No other details are available on Alexander McPherson. The lawyer in the case was Ernest Chambers who had legal offices in Port Fairy, Warrnambool and Koroit at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. This document was in his possession at his Warrnambool office and passed down to successive lawyers occupying legal premises in Kepler Street. The document was found in the same building, the former premises of the legal firm, Mackay Taylor, where it was located in 2014 and handed over to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society.This document is only of interest as being originally in the possession of Ernest Chambers, a lawyer who was in Warrnambool for several years at the end of the 19th century. No connection between Warrnambool and Alexander McPherson has been found. This is a cream-coloured sheet of parchment paper, folded twice. It contains hand written material in brown ink giving details of the Letters of Administration following the death of Alexander McPherson of Rochester in 1883. A seal of the Supreme Court of Victoria is attached with a green ribbon and it has ,a black stamp of the Master in Equity of the Supreme Court of Victoria. One page has been ruled at the edges with brown lines. The writing is somewhat faded but the document is legible. The P.S Ruby is possibly the vessel mentioned in "1898 Register of Marine Underwriter's Association of Victoria." ; 'Ruby : composite construction P.S (14 h.p) ; 117/96 tonnage L 82.0 ft. X B 18.7 ft. X D 4.9 ft. ; registered - Adelaide 1884, No - 74,898. Built in Moama, N.S.W in 1876, owned by River Murray N. Co. (Reference "The Register of Australian & New Zealand Shipping 1898" page 113. This photograph was possibly taken in 1900. The photograph shows height and position of the wharf at Morgan, with another paddle steamer behind.The photo shows the height and position of the wharf at Morgan. The photo shows the positioning of cargo on the barges. This photo shows the use of rickshaw devices, used to load the cargo onto the barge. This is a copy of a photograph taken in 1902 to show the extent of the drought on the Darling River. It is taken near the town of Wilcannia and relates to P000012. 8 paddle steamers and 4 barges can be seen. One barge is being unloaded onto the bank. One of the paddle steamers is thought to be the P.S Wandering Jew which was built in Victoria in 1866 (Ref. The Register of Australian and N.Z Shipping' by C. Earnshaw. Page 136)This is a photograph showing the extent of the 1902 drought in the Murray Darling River basin. It also shows the type of cargo and the capacity or the barges. It also shows unloading techniques. Compare this to P000012 which shows the same scene, but with no boats present. A copy of a black and white photograph of boats stranded on the Central Darling River in the 1902 drought. Various paddle steamers and barges are piled along the left bank, including the 'P.S Wandering Jew'. Cargo is being transferred on the bank.The National Library of Australia stamp is on the back. It also show the difference between stern wheelers and side wheeler paddle steamers. The P.S Nellie was 79.8 feet in length and 20.4 feet in breadth, and depth of 4.6 feet. It weighed 58 tons net and 66 tons gross. It was made of wood and had a capacity of 10 H.P. It was built at Moama in 1882 and was registered in Adelaide in 1882. Its registration number was No. 83,672. The P.S Nellie was owned by the River Murray N. Co. This photograph was taken in 1900. It looks like the P.S Nellie was a passenger paddle steamer, taking passengers up and down the rivers.Not much is known about the P.S. Nellie, but in this photograph it looks like it is a passenger paddle steamer, transporting people up and down the rivers.This is a photo copy of black and white photograph of the P.S Nellie. The photocopy was done in 1984. The Bridge Hotel was built by Henry Hopwood to house visitors to the town crossing the Murray River on his punt crossing, which was situated just below the Bridge Hotel on the Murray River. The accommodation was spacious and grand! In the right back corner of the photograph, the 'lantern' roof of the St Georges Hall can be seen. The street is level with the front entrance to the Hotel, which is very different to what it is today.The photograph shows hotel activities and accommodation in the late 19th Century.A black and white photograph of the Bridge Hotel taken from the Hopwood Gardens. The photograph shows four silky oak trees growing along the front of the building. There is an empty flag pole outside the front of the building. The right wing advertises billiards, whilst the left wing apparently was a bar.Written on the building can be seen the words; HOTEL and BILLIARDS. Photograph taken from the river looking south west as the Adelaide enters the water backwards, from the soil ramp . The right hand side of the photograph is in shadow so is very dark. 2 people can be seen on the deck with possibly another boat moored beside the Adelaide and a small motor boat to the left of that.A significant social and historical event in Echuca as many local community groups had committed many hours and much money to re-float the Adelaide to add it to the stocks for the development of the Port of Echuca as a major tourist attraction for the region.Black and white photograph of re-floating of the P. This coloured photograph shows the re-floating of the P. S. Adelaide on a soil ramp, being encouraged (rear entry) down the temporary slipway onto the river. The temporary slipway is clearly visible with a workman (possibly Kevin Hutchinson) standing at thelast log as the boat nears the waters' edge. A winching float and an outboard motor boat are at the right. Spectators line the banks of the ramp. Part of a photo sequence no.P000041; P000045; P000046; P000047; P000048 of P. S. Adelaide re-floating.The re-floating of the P. S. Adelaide was a Significant community social event evident by the number of spectators in the photograph. The community had invested a great deal of time and money into re-floating the paddlesteamer. The newspaper covered the event in detail with a number of action shots as the boat made its rear entry from the temporary slipway onto the river.
