The medal is colloquially known as 'Wilfred' within the armed forces. It was decided at the end of WWI that each of the allies should each issue their own bronze victory medal with a similar design, similar equivalent wording and identical ribbon. The British medal was designed by W. McMillan. The front depicts a winged classical figure representing victory. Approximately 5.7 million victory medals were issued, making it more exclusive than the British War Medal. This honey tank supplied honey to Beechworth residents for between 40 and 50 years. The beekeeper (William Robinson) would warm some honey, and pour it into this tank. Established on 26th July 1919 this war medal was colloquially known as 'Squeak'. The medal was awarded to officers of the British and Imperial Forces who either entered a theatre of war or entered service overseas between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918. Approximately 6.5 million British War Medals were issued. Approximately 6.4 million of these were the silver versions of this medal. The front of the medal depicts the head of George V. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council.This item is associated with the Orbost Shire Council.
