Photo looks west from the Ballarat Fire Station (East) tower, and has a good view looking along Barkly St. Shows the crossing loop between Eastwood and Main St with one tram in the view. Wal has dated the photo as 1914 in his album notes. On rear Wal Jack has written "Looking up Barkly St towards Mt Pleasant. Photo taken from Ballarat Fire Station about 1914-1916 period. The site of the Greensborough swimming pool taken from the corner of Grimshaw Street and Para Road. The barometer board shows the amount needed by public subscription. The two storey hall in the centre back had been the Rechabite Hall, later Masonic Hall then Ashril Theatre. The picture also shows the undeveloped nature of the area behind the Main St shops. This area was later sealed and made into the Carter car parking reserve. Hemley George & Eliza nee Chandler. Eliza was born in 1838 in Bedfordshire England and died in 1914 aged 76. Liza Chandler married George Hemley on 4th Jan. 1854 in Shoreditch Middlesex. George was born in 1818 in Bedfordshire, England and died in 1887 aged 69 and buried in Stawell Cemetery. Photo taken by G. Woods Main St, Stawell. This photograph of a two storey building now the premises of Webb J.H. & Seng Hpa, Solicitors but once "The Union Bank". Its located at 153 Main Street Stawell. Previously the first Union bank was built in c 1888 on the corner Victoria Place & Main street and designed by designed by G. C. Inskip. This is the second Union Bank the first was second from the corner of Lanzell St. in Main St. and was eventually pulled down. The 1st bank was shown in photos by C. B. Herbert. Commonwealth Federation Memorial unveiled 1903 corner of Lower Main St and Barnes Street Stawell. The memorial commemorates the Federation of the Australian States into the Commonwealth of Australia on the 1st January 1901. The memorial cost 100 pounds and has a foundation supporting 4 columns of Scottish rose granite. The base & caps of these columns are of black marble. Around the tops of the columns are the names of the six States. George Robson and George Gray, Stawell's monumental masons who carried out the work were also thought to be responsible for the design. Lazarus Esq advising that he capably acted as Surveyor and Superintending Engineer for the construction of various sections of tramway track in Ballarat and thanking home for his work. Signed by E. James Beauchamp, Assistant Engineer and Manager. Accompanying the photocopy is a photocopy of a letter dated 17/3/1993 from Brian Robertson of 20 Main St Welshpool.
