The Independent Order of Rechabites (IOR), also known as the Sons and Daughters of Rechab is a friendly society founded in England in 1835 as part of the wider British temperance movement to promote total abstinence from alcoholic beverages. This type of sash was worn by a Past District Chief Ruler. This particular sash belonged to Lieutenant Colonel William McGregor Cairncross. He lived at the property now known as 'Medlow', although during his occupancy it was known as 'Willcyrus', named after two of his sons - Sergeant William McGregor Cairncross and Trooper Cyrus Hay Cairncross, who served with the 2nd Scottish Horse during the Boer War and in British units in the First World War. Lt Col Cairncross served at the Victoria Barracks in Melbourne for 25 years and designed a water bottle used by Australian colonial troops. During the Boer War he was controller of stores at Victoria Barracks. The 269 Form 1 students in 12 groups, 1A to 1M, took the school’s population to nearly 700. Extensions to the 3 year old building commenced during the year to help accommodate the expected rising numbers of students. The smaller copy of the photograph in Box 22 was donated in 2014 by Peter Stapleton. A laminated, larger copy of this photograph is also in Box 22 (also has registration number 2015-07). A third copy of the photo is in the 'Linton State School - Photos' file. It is understood the laminated copy was donated by Graeme McGregor, one of the boys pictured, whose father worked in Linton for the railways. Some pupils in the laminated photo have been identified - names are on a typed slip of paper which is attached to the back of the copy. TOURELLO POST OFFICE WAS OPENED ON 1ST MAY 1868 AND WAS MOVED TO TOURELLO RAILWAY STATION. THIS WAS 3 KM FROM THE ORIGINAL SITE. ON 8TH OF AUGUST1887 THE ORIGINAL TOURELLO POST OFFICE WAS RE-OPENED AND THE BARREL NUMERAL CANCEL 620WAS RETURNED THERE. ON THE SAME DAY A NEW BARREL NUMERAL CANCEL 1587 WAS ALLOCATED TO TOURELLO RAILWAY STATION. THIS CANCEL IS RATED AS VERY RARE. TOURELLO RAILWAY STATIN POST OFFICE CLOSED ON 6TH JUNE 1950.
