Northern District School of Nursing nurse's cape

A red unlined cape with collar. Hook and eye at collar front. There are bands applied to outside shoulder of the cape on both sides and constructed with a centre back seam. The cape was worn outside the hospital when walking from accommodation. The accompanying documents are a photo of the original owner and donator of the cape, Vicki Simpkins, and a photo of the graduation group of nurses, 1972, in which Vicki is indicated.

There is a white cotton label at rear inside centre collar with 'PURE WOOL' printed in blue and 'W' printed in red. A blue arrow has been added to the graduation photo above Vicki Simpkins' head. The photo of Vicki has the inscription in black pen 'To Mum and Dad with all my love Vicki xx June 1970". At base right of photo is photographer's name 'martin washington'.

Black College of Nursing academic gown with 9.5 cm red satin central frontal strips at open front and cream lined red hood. There are 6 centimetre pleats each side and below the back yoke and sleeves are voluminous.

There is a cream label inside top rear back with embroidered details in red ' Raymond W. Bredin & Son, 17 Glenola Road, Chelsea Vic. Robe Makers stitched to gown in black cotton.

Nurse's one piece dress in yellow with yoke and central front chest panel in white. Dress fastens with full back zip to waist and metal hook and eye. There are two pockets at sides below waist. There is a gusset to each side of back to sleeve. There is a long sleeved, waist length jacket, satin lined, with round neck with five yellow buttons and button holes at front. The fabric is of stretch cotton.

Dress has a white label with 'Florgale Uniforms, Permanent Press' and washing instructions printed in red and blue and stitched to left rear neck facing. A trade mark, a ball in red and blue with the word 'Koratron' is also on this label. The jacket has a white label stitched to the lining at base of neck with 'Florgale Uniforms, Melbourne, Sydney" in gold. 'SW' and a female figure in long dress is embroidered in navy blue on the label.

The jacket has a white label stitched to the lining at base of neck with 'Florgale Uniforms, Melbourne, Sydney" in gold. 'SW' and a female figure in long dress is embroidered in navy blue on the label.

A silver-plated Georgen style silver plated floral bowl in its original box. The base is ten centimetres diameter pedestal with a decorative scroll around the edge, it's five centimetres high and tapers four and a half centimetres. The bowl has a flat bottom with curved sides that rise six centimetres to a 14 centimetre opening. The lid has a decorative scroll on its edge which supports an open grid of five concentric circles with eight pieces radiating from the centre circle. Inside the bowl there is an eight centimetre diameter plastic frame to hold flowers. Engraved on the bowl is NORTHEN DISTRICT SCHOOL OF NURSING IN APPRICIATION POLICE EXAMINATIONS 1982. Engraved on the base is SILVER PLATED IANTHE OF ENGLAND The brown cardboard box has blue and white writing- IANTHE No 178 GEOGIAN STYLE, an image of the bowl, SILVER PLATED FLORAL BOWL. There is a small white sticker with black numbers 177

A white porcelain feeding mug with gold trim. It has a five centimetres diameter base and curves out to nine centimetres diameter and is six and a half centimetres high. Two thirds of the top is enclosed. A three centimetre tapering to one centimetre, six centimetre long spout comes from the bottom of the mug in line with middle of the enclosed section. There is a one centimetre diameter, six centimetre long handle on the side. Used for feeding fluids to patients who are unable to hold a cup or are unable to sit up. Holes in the base of the spout control the flow. A German makers mark is on the base.

Two white caps without frill denotes first year nurse. Three white caps with frill denotes 2nd year nurse. Two white caps with blue stripe above frill denotes 3rd year nurse. One white cap with brown stripe above frill denotes third year after uniform changed in July 1974.

Brown stripe cap has 'Leung BBH' on central mitre in black marking pen. One blue stripe cap has 'Kelly" ? and 'NTI along central mitre. A second blue stripe cap has 'Freeman' in black marking pen on LHS mitre. One white frill cap has 'M.S.Anderson", a second white frill cap had 'N.T.' in marking pen and a button affixed to the central mitre. A third white frill cap has an embroidered name strip with 'K. Woodman in blue and 'B.B.H.' in black marking pen on the central mitre. One plain white cap has jumbled marking pen lettering 'NT 2NT3 NT3 on bottom RHS and a buttonhole to top of each mitre. A second plain wite cap has a buttonhole to top of each mitre.

Blue cotton uniform worn beneath white apron. The uniform is open at the front with eight button holes in right placket for buttons and shanks to attach. There are corresponding buttonholes on left side for closing, a small pocket at top left and a pocket at RHS of skirt. There is a small buttonhole at back of neck to attach white collar and white cuffs are attached to sleeves with two white buttons. The front has gathering from below the shoulders and the back top has an inverted pleat at centre. There is a white belt with two white buttons at one end attached with shanks and three sets of two button holes at the other end for closing. There is a white cap with frill and a line of blue braid above the frill indicating a third year trainee. There is a white apron with four buttonholes at the waist for closing and for the two shoulder straps.

A white tag with Joy Lewis' in red is attached to all items. N.T.S in black marking pen is printed on back hem of neck. There are many black marking pen numbers and letters on the cap: NTS, BAS, 574, BH5, 530, 574 The apron has the name Lewis and figures 638 in black marking pen on inside of waist.

Two white tags one with 'Cotton' in red is attached inside back neck. The other white tag has the name 'Lesley Moloney' in red embroidery There are other indecipherable words in black marking pen, probably laundry marks.
